PROJECT PRIZE Saturday Program Session I October 4th 2014 - January 24th 2015 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Kajukenbo: is a hybrid martial-art which was founded in the Palmas settlement on Oahu, Hawaii. Due to the violence in the settlement, 5 martial artists from 5 different backgrounds came together to develop an art that would be practical and effective to use in the street. The style was developed to suit all ranges and speeds. Kajukenbo maintains its strong self-defense focus and street practicality due to founders (and their progeny’s) constant polishing of the techniques. The school of Kajukenbo I will be teaching from is the Gaylord method. As recognized by the Kajukenbo Association of America. Kajukenbo has 8 mental aims which help guide students in their growth and development: Belief, Self-Control, Honesty, Courage, Patience, Perseverance, Respect for Others and Love for humanity. Away to China We Go: This workshop is for beginners who are interested in learning about other cultures and languages, it introduces the students to the Pin Yin (Pronunciation of the Chinese language, thorough the development of basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing). Contrasts and similarities between the Chinese and US education and culture systems will be discussed. Chinese family values, marriage, religious believes, ancient and contemporary way of dressing, music, TV, movies, transportation, commerce and current cost of living and FOOD will be explored. Art Extravanganza! Sculpting /Painting & Charcoal drawing: This class will introduce students to some familiar painting materials and explore how to use them in less familiar ways. Students will get a firm handling on color theory, material, and proper techniques as well as how to transform all of that knowledge and material to fit their own personal aesthetics and creativity. There will be an emphasis on Acrylic Painting on canvas and acetate, watercolors, as well as Asian Brush Painting and the Application of all of those techniques on a final painting the students design themselves. Students will also have the opportunity to play with clay and learn how to properly handle it, preserve it, and sculpt it into various objects and figures. This will prepare them for the future in building larger scale work that will last. Aside from traditional clay work, students will also get to experiment with Paper Mache and Cardboard making masks, and mold making and casting. This class will expand the student’s minds for what is sculpture and show them how to safely make 3D objects. This class also includes charcoal drawing, whether students are familiar with drawing with charcoal or have no experience at all. Students will learn the fundamentals of the material and enjoy a vast amount of projects that will constantly build up their skills. Activities will range from figure drawing, still life observation, drawing outside, to impossible compositions and creatures. Not everything can be expressed in words, and visual expression is a great tool to have. How to Start a Business: With the rise of access to information of all kinds, and consumer bases that span the globe via the web, there’s never been a better time to be an entrepreneur. The Internet Entrepreneur curriculum will introduce the young people of the Project Prize program to the fundamentals of what it takes to be an entrepreneur and teach them how to brand their business on the web. Garage Band: Students will learn the fundamentals of basic theory while playing in a band setting. Within the term, all students will have learned to play 1-3 songs or accompany other musicians and singers. They will be assigned a song list to listen to in class or at home to exercise their ear training. Creativity in Building Design: Join us and learn about the amazing world of building, while discovering, testing, challenging and developing your creative side. Learning about buildings gives us the architectural alphabet; understanding texture, scale and space forms the very words of the architectural language. Small, ‘do it yourself’ working projects will teach you to visualize, and armed with technical information you’ll learn to express your imagination on paper and with simple materials. Tall buildings, domes and bridges will emerge from your hands in their beautiful structural geometry. At least one project will have a direct application on QCC Campus (bleachers at the athletic field, shaded outdoor seating, a coffee shop or a ‘statement’ campus entry). We believe that both learning and building can be enjoyable activities, and this class will bring you all these. Math Matters: Utilizing the common core standards, students will apply the math they know per grade level to solve problems arising in everyday life. Slam Poetry: This course is designed to take you through a process of discovery, expression, and revision while exploring pertinent issues that face urban youth today. Students will engage in community responsibility and advocacy discussion and the course will culminate in a poetry event during which every participant will have the opportunity to perform one or more of their selected pieces. In addition to a live performance, every participant will create a portfolio of poetry and hip-hop that has been reviewed by peers and is publication ready. The Keys to Career Success: This workshop will expose students to the concepts, skills and mind set they will need to prepare for their entry into the job market. There will be a focus on comparing the commitment, hard work and discipline demonstrated by athletes to the commitment, hard work and discipline that launching a career requires. Best practices will be presented on the topics discussed. These will include: career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, networking, internships, job shadowing, volunteerism, financial literacy, professionalism, teamwork, time management and business and social etiquette. Mathabilities: Fractions are constantly the biggest problem spot in elementary mathematics, and a misunderstanding of fractions can lead to many other issues down the line. This course will help to ease fraction anxiety and allow students to be more aware of fractions through games, and the probability that comes from them. Students will focus on various math topics such as solving equations and manipulating radicals. Step: Through stepping, students will use their bodies as instruments to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word. Tutoring: Tutoring is offered each Saturday in various subjects and students need to notify Ms. Rosa in the meeting room (S224) to set up the sessions.
