UNITED WAY OF THURSTON COUNTY COMMUNICATIONS and EVENT DIRECTOR SCOPE United Way of Thurston County (UWTC) is now recruiting for a Communications and Event Director (CED). UWTC is a nonprofit organization that mobilizes people and resources to improve lives and strengthen our community. We focus on strengthening education, income/financial stability and health to get at the underlying causes of social problems. UWTC works to advance the common good and to improve lives of those that need it the most. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as an integral member of the management team, the CED will be responsible for the development and implementation of UWTC’s communication and event strategies and will help drive UWTC’s strategic direction. This position will support our development, volunteerism and community impact activities. The CED advances UWTC’s position with relevant constituents, as well as develops broader knowledge, awareness and donor support. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Communications and Marketing Develops and implements integrated marketing and communications strategies, timelines and activities that promote United Way and our community initiatives o Oversees strategy and manages production of all public relations efforts o Generates and helps implement marketing and publicity ideas o Assists managing directors in developing strategies for communicating program activities and accomplishments with stakeholders and the community Use existing national United Way network marketing tools and templates to develop, create and maintain branded marketing materials and content including brand identity, print collateral, email communications, presentation materials, online and print advertising, videos and other communications-related materials. Writes and edits media releases, newsletter articles, brochure copy, pledge forms, and other materials as needed. Initiates and oversees updates to our web and social media sites o Create timely updates on website/social media. Make sure that all departments are represented and refreshed weekly Manage internal communication standards and processes and marketing strategies. Establish and cultivate relationships with community members o Support workplace campaign and community impact work o Document relationships, encounters, prospects and other pertinent information in our Andar donor database. Recruits and supervises volunteers for activities related to marketing, communications and events, including our ad hoc communications committee. Track, assess and report on our marketing outreach strategies and continually improve our performance. Events Management Manage and coordinate all aspects of three major annual events. Help research and secure sponsorships and in-kind donations for annual events Recruit and oversee volunteers for event planning assistance, preparation, day of support and event wrap-up KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES At least three to five years’ professional experience in marketing/communications and events. Strong marketing intuition and skills. Proven entrepreneurial self-starter, motivator and implementer with excellent leadership, teamwork, and integrity characteristics. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, be flexible and to work in a fast paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Technologically proficient and comfortable with marketing and graphics software including Constant Contact, MS Office and In-Design. Web page and social-media expertise and experience. Excellent writing skills -- sharp, personable, and memorable. Adept as a strategic thinker and also as a detail-oriented project manager. Passion for United Way of Thurston County’s mission Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive; can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives. REQUIRED/DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field; an advanced degree is desired. Three to five years of progressively professional level experience in communications and marketing and/or event planning is desired. Additional professional level experience can substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
