ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER AND ATHLETIC TRAINER
(Bargaining Unit Position)
(Ranges 38 and 46)
DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the Director of Athletics, provide health services for the prevention,
evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for student athletes involved in various intercollegiate sports; maintain and operate the campus athletic training room facility; administer appropriate
injury records system as required by law; provide health advice and counseling to athletes, coaches,
and physical education faculty; and perform other related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Assistant Athletic Trainer and Athletic Trainer positions are distinguished from other classes of the
Student Support Series in that incumbents are required to evaluate the physical condition of student
athletes and administer first aid, emergency medical care, and provide rehabilitation and reconditioning
techniques to injured students. The Athletic Trainer is also responsible for the administrative duties
required by law and serves as the lead trainer.
The Athletic Trainers support Student Learning Outcomes by ensuring student athletes have fulfilled all
of the health requirements to participate in intercollegiate sports and to ensure that injured athletes are
able to return safely to participating in sports activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Any one position may not include all the essential functions listed, nor do all the listed essential
functions include all tasks, which may be found in the positions of the class.
Assistant Athletic Trainer/Athletic Trainer:
• Provide athletic training services to student athletes engaged in traditional and non-traditional
seasons of intercollegiate athletics;
• Provide medical and athletic training services to the students registered in the Advanced Skill and
Training Development classes;
• Evaluate and diagnose student athletes’ injuries;
• Provide advanced first aid and therapeutic techniques and refer to a physician or appropriate
medical facility if deemed necessary;
• Provide proper rehabilitation and reconditioning based on the diagnosis and/or in accordance with
physician instruction;
• Administer first aid and emergency medical care including lifesaving procedures to student athletes;
• Attend and provide athletic training and risk management services for home sporting events as
assigned;
• Provide care for both the home and visiting teams;
• In the absence of the team physician, advise coaches and athletes on the ability of the injured
athlete to participate;
• Advise and counsel athletes and coaches in the development of physical conditioning and training
programs to enhance athlete strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination;
• Conduct body composition analysis and urinalysis testing for wrestling weight certification;
• Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance guidelines;

Meet with teams to review and assist with health screening examinations and other required
medical forms prior to participation in athletics in coordination with the requirements of the CCCAA;
Complete and process paperwork such as: pre-participation medical packet, emergency and daily
treatment reports, detailed injury reports, insurance claim forms, and doctor notes/releases;
Operate a wide variety of therapeutic and rehabilitative equipment;
Maintain the athletic training room by keeping all sinks, baths, tables and other modalities
organized, sanitary and in proper working order;
Administer technical directions issued by physicians;
Promote and maintain a professional environment for the treatment of both sexes; and
Perform other related duties as required.
Assistant Athletic Trainer:
• Collaborate and assist the Athletic Trainer for the above essential functions;
• Aid with organization and implementation of concussion management system in accordance with
governing bodies;
• Assist with inventory and equipment needs, requisitions and organize supplies;
• Assist with scheduling the work of athletic training students;
• Monitor athletic training students in accordance with the protocol established by the Athletic Trainer;
and
• Assist with scheduling physicians for athletic training room clinics.
Athletic Trainer:
In addition to overseeing the above essential functions:
• Oversee organization and implementation of concussion management system in accordance with
governing bodies;
• Conduct bi-annual concussion education meetings with athletes and coaches in accordance with
governing bodies;
• Organize and implement bi-annual concussion baseline testing in accordance with governing
bodies;
• Act in a lead capacity to oversee and mentor the Assistant Athletic Trainer;
• Assign and coordinate the work delegated to the Assistant Athletic Trainer;
• Supervise and instruct athletic training students and oversee their education and field experience;
• Prepare written policies and procedures in collaboration with the college policy regarding
emergency management;
• Oversee, research, and analyze inventory and equipment needs;
• Oversee completion of requisitions and organization of supplies;
• Develops, directs policies and procedures for athletic training room and athletic training students;
• Oversee and schedule the work of athletic training students;
• Complete and process paperwork for independent study students and volunteer workers;
• Conduct informational meetings annually on Blood-borne Pathogens as required by Board policy;
• Develop a plan to accommodate Athletic Trainer services and home athletic contests within the
available budget;
• Oversee scheduling physicians for athletic training room clinics;
• Schedule meetings with the Athletic Director to review and update CCCAA and college medical
policies;
• Submit, in accordance with CCCAA guidelines, appropriate medical documentation required for
injury illness waiver requests which impacts student athlete eligibility;
• Work in collaboration with the students’ insurance agent, reviews athletic insurance coverage and
assists student athletes and staff in the correct submission of insurance claims; and

Organize meetings with Health Center Coordinator to review student-athlete and college insurance
policies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
• Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, athletic training, sports medicine, or a related field.
Preferred
• Master's degree in kinesiology, athletic training, sports medicine, or a related field.
Experience:
Required
Assistant Athletic Trainer:
• Two years of experience as a college athletic trainer. A graduate degree in a relevant field may
substitute for the two years.
Athletic Trainer:
• Five years of experience as a college athletic trainer. A graduate degree in a relevant field may
substitute for two of the years.
Knowledge of:
• Principles, practices, procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the prevention, care, and
rehabilitation of athletic injuries;
• Advanced principles and practices of first aid, CPR, physiology, anatomy, and kinesiology;
• Practices, procedures and techniques involved in taping, stretching, and wrapping athletes to
prevent injury or re-injury;
• Recognition and evaluation of athletic injuries;
• Appropriate situations for physician referral;
• Operation of a variety of first aid, and therapeutic equipment;
• Principles in counseling students with personal health issues;
• Physical fitness, hygiene, disinfectant, and safety procedures related to athletics;
• Liability issues that confront the modern athletic program;
• Proper techniques to prevent personal injury in carrying out physical requirements of the position;
• Detail oriented record-keeping techniques;
• Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing,
spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software; and
• CCCAA Constitution and Bylaws.
Ability to:
• Work a flexible schedule according to the season of sport. Work hours will generally be Monday –
Friday 10-6:30;
• Work some evening and weekend hours depending of the needs of the department;
• Perform duties in multiple environments. Environments may include, but are not limited to
gymnasiums, athletics fields and pool decks;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance
of duties; and

Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning
disabilities.
Physical ability to:
 Lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds;
 Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
 Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or
email;
 Sit or stand for extended periods of time; and
 Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.
License and Certificates (current within the last year):
Required
 Valid driver’s license and eligible to obtain California driver’s license upon hire;
 A current Athletic Trainer Certificate (ATC) from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of
Certification (NATABOC); and
 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for the
Professional Rescuer.
