Thinking, assessing, analyzing and creating from a global perspective The M.A. in Integrated Global Communication at Kennesaw State University is preparing a new generation of leaders in globally integrated organizations. This innovative and contemporary master’s program is aimed at communication professionals who appreciate how economically interdependent and socially interconnected the world has become. The program prepares tomorrow’s communication leaders to think, assess, analyze and create from a global perspective. Featuring the only global communication masters program in the southeast The M.A. in Integrated Global Communication at Kennesaw State University is the only master’s program in the southeast and one of only a handful in the U.S. devoted to global communication. Located in one of the nation’s most vibrant global business and media centers, the Atlanta-metro area, the program offers an excellent balance of theory and skills important for a professional master’s program. Building collaboration and leadership with a cohort model The M.A. in Integrated Global Communication is a 16-month program that begins in the fall and ends at the conclusion of the following fall. A cohort model where students advance through the program together builds collaboration and leadership skills. Immersing students in foreign cultures through an international experience The hallmark of the M.A. in Integrated Global Communication is the summer international experience where students travel abroad to experience foreign cultures. Students may take a twoweek study tour of a global commercial center such as Hong Kong or London, work abroad in a professional practicum for a global corporation or international nonprofit, or study abroad at a KSU partner institution. Finishing with a team-oriented professional project The capstone course for the M.A. in Integrated Global Communication is a team-oriented, professional project where student teams compete against each other to resolve a global communication project for a client. An all-inclusive tuition that includes textbooks and international travel The $28,000 tuition for the M.A. in Integrated Global Communication covers all four semesters and includes costs for KSU student fees, textbooks and other learning materials for all four semesters, as well as the cost of round-trip airfare to international locations for the summer international experience. Curriculum FOUR SEMESTERS, 16 MONTHS, 33 HOURS WITH AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE MODULE FIRST FALL 9 HOURS COM 7100 3 hours SURVEY OF GLOBAL COMMUNICATION An overview of global communication: its modern development and the role of information technology; global communication law and policies, global news and information flow; global communication and culture; communication in transnational and global companies, global public relations and advertising; and issues in global communication. COM 7200 3 hours COMMUNICATION THEORY An in-depth view of key communication theories from mass media, persuasion, and organizational communication that help us understand the communication process. SPRING 9 HOURS SUMMER 6 HOURS COM 7400 3 hours COMMUNICATION RESEARCH METHODS Analysis of types of problems, concepts, variables, definitions, designs, measurement techniques, and interpretation of data prevalent in quantitative and qualitative communication research. Includes elementary statistical processes used in data analysis. CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: COM 7500 3 hours COMMUNICATION FOR MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS An examination of the forms and functions of organizational communication relevant to multinational firms for the purpose of building cooperation, collaboration and coordination across cultural boundaries. COM 7710 INTEGRATED GLOBAL COMMUNICATION PRACTICUM Students will work in for-profit companies or public relations/ advertising agencies and nonprofit organizations that have global reach. COM 7300 3 hours INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS An examination of theories of communication and culture in international business environments for the purpose of building public relations policies and practices and integrated communication planning. COM 7600 3 hours COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR An in-depth exploration of a particular salient issue in global communication or global organizations and its interaction with technology. NOTE: At the conclusion of this semester the student cohort will propose topics for the colloquium for their final fall session. The cohort will continue work to design the Colloquium in Global Communication throughout the Spring and Summer Sessions. NOTE: Students will be encouraged to take a conversational foreign language course to help them during the summer international experience. This course will not count as graduate-credit hours. COM 7700 INTEGRATED GLOBAL COMMUNICATION STUDY ABROAD Students will attend classes in one of the foreign institutions with which the Department of Communication has established a partnership. COM 7720 INTEGRATED GLOBAL COMMUNICATION STUDY TOUR Students unable to take extended leave from their work or family will have the opportunity to participate in a two-week tour of communication offices and/or communication agencies in a foreign destination. NOTE: Tuition covers round trip international travel and some lodging costs for summer international experience. Tuition also covers costs for all textbooks. FINAL FALL 9 HOURS COM 7800 3hours COLLOQUIUM IN GLOBAL COMMUNICATION A series of discussions and presentations by faculty and professionals regarding a series of topics chosen by the student cohort the previous fall. The cohort will help design the course. COM 7900 6 hours INTEGRATED GLOBAL COMMUNICATION CAPSTONE Students will work in teams to design an integrated global communication campaign for a client that addresses a particular problem or opportunity. Teams will propose research-based strategies and tactics for the client and will compete against each other for the client’s business. Teams will meet weekly with the instructor to submit progress reports, discuss issues, and get guidance and direction. Teams will present their proposals to the client in a public forum to which faculty, students and professionals are invited. Admissions ADMISSION QUALIFICATIONS, SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS ADMISSION QUALIFICATIONS Prior experiences in communication practices is preferred, but excellent applicants without communication-related experience is considered. Admission decisions are based in part on professional experience, GPA, essay, analytical skills, and language skills. Degree requirements : An earned BA or BS degree in communication or related field or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Openness to multicultural/global perspectives: Professionals and recent graduates with a professional or academic interest in the role of communication in a global scale. GRE score: A minimum score of 900 (verbal and quantitative combined) on the GRE. GPA: An accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. All students must take the conversational foreign language course. ESL courses at KSU are available for international students.
