Weather phenomena occur around the world. As we’ve discussed, these phenomenal weather events have impacts on people, places, and our whole environment. What makes each event occur? This is your chance to research and prepare a project based on the weather phenomena of your choice. There are two components to this project: a written research part and an interactive element. 1.Research: Minimum two well written paragraphs, maximum six. Paragraphs must be written in your own words and the sources you used must be recorded and handed in. (Groups of 2 must double the amount of research handed in) 2. Interactive: You have the choice of doing one of the following: A class demonstration. Similar to what we have done in Science in the past. Demonstrate how your particular weather phenomena works by showing an experiment. There are lots of safe ideas on the websites provided for you. Must consult with Ms. Schmitz about materials and set up. A 3D model An iMovie of a fake weather forecasting or news clip. A diorama (a representation in a shoe box) weather forecasting or news clip A diorama The following pages are a guide for you to follow. Please make sure you use your time wisely and follow the outline provided. Due: Wednesday October 16 1 Research Your Topic: _____________________________ Your guiding questions (must have three – we brainstormed these in class): 1. 2. 3. Questions you MUST cover: 1. What impact does your weather phenomena have on the world? 2. What causes your weather phenomena to start? 3. Where/when is your weather phenomena most common? 2 Outline Here is a skeleton of how to set up your research. 1. Introduction paragraph (Introduces your topic and explains what you will be writing about) 2. Second paragraph (Provides answers on one or two of the questions) 3. Third paragraph (Provides answers to the other questions) 4. Conclusion paragraph (Wraps up your topic and explains why it is important to know this information) 3 Weather Websites Here is a list of websites I have reviewed that you can use for your research. These sites are designed for children and have many ideas for simple experiments you may try. Remember to list these sites in your references when you use them. http://www.weatherwizkids.com/ Amazing resource designed by a meteorologist for kids. Has lots of information about hurricanes, tornadoes, clouds, winter storms, etc. Also has experiments. https://eo.ucar.edu/webweather/ Information about thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards and clouds. Detailed glossary of terms. http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/weather.html Information about different phenomena. Also has experiment ideas and games. http://www.wxdude.com/ Fast links on the left side of the page. Some don’t work, but those that do are quite informative. Also has some poems and songs that may inspire you. http://kids.discovery.com/tell-me/curiosity-corner/weather Some of the basics about weather, like lighting, rain and fog. 4 References Page Here is a page where you can keep track of the books and websites that you used for your research. The requirements are that you use AT LEAST ONE website and AT LEAST ONE book. Here is a website that you can use to make sure that you reference all of your resources properly. http://www.citethisforme.com/ Resource #1: _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Resource #2: _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Resource #3: _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Resource #4: _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Resource #5: _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5 Rubric 6
