Monday - 13th of May Transportation Today we went with the bus and boat to England. We left school around half past 8 and started driving to Calais. Just before we crossed the border between Belgium and the Netherlands we stopped for half an hour. We arrived at Calais around two o’clock and the boat left twenty minutes later. From Dover we went to Canterbury where we stayed until 6 o’clock and from there on we travelled to London. The time we spent in the bus was nice even though it took very long. We had a friendly driver and we could play our own music. The boat was ok, but the train would have been better and faster. It was a bit boring, very crowded and you could easily get lost. Food and lodging For lunch we had to take our own food from home, because we would be in the bus around lunchtime and the food on the boat was very expensive. In the evening we had to take care of our own food. We got some money from mister Tijl for the whole group including me, Maaike, Isla, Kayra en Sanne. Me and Isla had crepes for dinner and the others went to Subway. After dinner we decided to buy some ice-cream, because we had money left. It was very nice that we could choose our own dinner and the food was very tasty! In the evening we arrived at the International Students Hostel. The first impressions wasn’t so good. We were in a room with 10 girls and we had 3 showers upstairs to share with 14 girls. Luckily enough the showers weren’t that bad and the beds were ok. However, a room with 10 girls was so crowded and busy. They could better have had all small rooms instead of all big rooms and some small rooms. Attractions The attractions we went to were the city of Canterbury and Regent Park. They had told us some things about the city before and there was also some information about the city in the booklet of London. We spent only 1,5 hours in the city and most of the time we should be using for dinner. It was a small historic city, but very beautiful . Especially the centre of the city was nice with the beautiful church and the lovely small streets. It was a disappointment that we didn’t have longer. After we arrived in London and had find our way we went to Regent Park where we made a walk for an hour. It was a big, beautiful and peaceful park. It would have been better if we had done something more than just walking. Activities We haven’t done very much this day, because we were travelling the whole day. In Canterbury we went to the nearest bank, because some of us needed money, and we searched for a place to eat. We came across some shops and we went into a sort of touristic shop. We also had an ice-cream after dinner and we sat down in front of the church for a moment. In London we went to Regent Park where we made a walk with the whole group. I hadn’t expected that we would do so much the first day, but I liked it! Schedule The schedule wasn’t very busy. We travelled a lot and we were in the bus a lot. We didn’t really had a schedule and the schedule we had was changed afterwards, because we had to be in London earlier London review Maaike, Sanne, Isla, Ramona, Kayra than we thought we had to be. The schedule was a bit boring, because of all the travelling, but there was no other way of spending the day. However, it could have been more interesting if we had travelled less. Some more leisure time in Canterbury would also have been better and we could have seen more of the city. Leisure time On the boat and in Canterbury we had some leisure time. The leisure time we had, was shorter than was scheduled, because the bus drivers weren’t allowed to drive that much anymore and we had to be in London before they couldn’t drive anymore. Even though it was short, the leisure time nice, but they could have scheduled it better. The change was made on the last moment, but they could have thought of that before. Other Doesn’t apply to this day Tuesday - 14th of may Food and lodging In the morning we had breakfast in the hotel for the first time, we were able to choose from three items from a number of things you could have for breakfast, such as: scrambled egg, sausages, beans in tomato saus, bacon or toast. It wasn’t really extensive, though typical English. Around noon we had about half an hour to search for something to eat, but not everybody managed to eat something. In the afternoon we went to a Greek restaurant, which was very tasty and I really recommend going there, too. The hotel itself was quite clean. However, the beds weren’t really comfortable, they were very hard and to small. Attractions/ Activities In the morning we went to from Buckingham Palace, via High Park Corner to Trafalgar Square and we rested for a while on the stairs of the National Art Gallery. Later we went on walking to the British Museum and we had for about an hour and a half for visiting the exhibitions, which we think was way too short, we would have liked some more time in there because it was very interesting. We thought it was by far the most interesting museum we visited that week. After noon we went with the bus to Candem town and visited the Horse Stable market and shopped there for about three hours. After dinner we went walking through Regent Park. Schedule Breakfast walking to Buckingham Palace High Park Corner Trafalgar Square British Museum Bus to Candem Town London review Maaike, Sanne, Isla, Ramona, Kayra Horse Stable market Greek restaurant Regent Park Leisure time We had for about three hours of leisure time, which was, in our opinion exactly enough. Wednesday – 15th of May Transportation We went with the bus to Southwark Bridge. After that we had to walk everything. All the walking was very tiring. Food and lodging In the morning we had the same breakfast as the other days. You could choose 3 things to eat, you could choose from toast, white beans in tomato sauce, potato, bacon and mushrooms. You could take some juice, tea or coffee. The breakfast was nice, it was not very much. The lunch we had to take care of ourselves, just like the other days. We ate in the Starbucks at Regent street, we had some coffee and a muffin. In the evening the group was divided into two groups. One group was going to eat Chinese and the other group was going to the Pizza hut. That evening we were in the group which was going to eat Chinese. We sat in groups at round tables, every table had his own plates full of Chinese food. We got plates with vegetables, with meat and with rice. The rice was okay, but the vegetables and the meat wasn’t very tasty. Attractions Today we had three attractions: The Globe, London Bridge Experience and Prim Rose Hill. The Globe We went with the bus to the Globe theatre. We got a tour through the Globe and an older woman explained us how everything went in the early days, how it was build and how it is used now. It thought it was very interesting, the stories the woman told were very different than most stories I’ve heard. I’ve learned a lot about the history of London, the Globe and Shakespeare. London Bridge Experience London Bridge Experience is a haunted house. In the first part you go through all kind of rooms. In these rooms somebody tells you something about the history of London and bridges in London. After that you are locked up in a little room, you have to watch a movie from about 5 minutes. After you have to hold the shoulders of someone in front of you, you go into the next part like a train. You had to walk through small dark corridors, it was very scary. Everywhere was smoke and ‘dead’ bodyparts. A couple of times there jumped a man in front of you, to scare you. I found it very scary and I’ve screamed a lot. London review Maaike, Sanne, Isla, Ramona, Kayra Prim Rose Hill or soccer In the evening we would have had a Photo Safari, but we didn’t do that because the evening before the weather was too bad for Prim Rose Hill. So instead of going on Photo Safari we could choose to go to Prim Rose Hill or to go play soccer in Regent Park. Activities After we visited the globe we sat with the whole group at the river Thames. We had a beautiful view of the Thames and the other side of London. Then we walked to a large building. Inside the building we sat down with a group. That group was consisting of Joell, Matthias, Sanne, Isla, Ramona, Sebastiaan, Brandon. After the London Bridge Experience we (Joris, Isla, Sanne, Ramona and Bram) went to the Starbucks around Regent Street, we bought some coffee and muffins. And we sat down at the stairs of a statue. We watched the people and fed the birds. When we were finished drinking our coffee, we went shopping. We walked over Regent street and Oxford street. We took a picture with a Abercrombie & Fitch male model and we had a lot of fun. Schedule Our schedule was very relaxed this day, is wasn’t very busy. We had a lot of leisure time in between the attractions. 8.00 Breakfast 9.00 Bus to Southwark Bridge 9.45 The Globe 13.00 London Bridge Experience 14.30 Shopping and Lunch 18.00 Dinner 20.30 Prim Rose Hill or Soccer Leisure time In our leisure time, we went shopping, eating and making fun. We visited a lot of different shops and bought some nice clothes. The keep the boys satisfied we also sat down, ate something and made fun. We had a very nice time. Other Doesn’t apply to this day. Thursday May 16th Transportation First, we were picked up by bus and dropped for the Street Art Tour. We walked around London with our tour guide and were picked up again by bus to Central London. We walked for another couple of 100 meters to Harrods. Then we walked along Welling Arch, Buckingham Palace, through St James Park, along the Big Ben to Haymarket. From there on, we walked to the Stomp Theatre and after that London review Maaike, Sanne, Isla, Ramona, Kayra we walked back to the hotel. I found it really pleasant that we were picked up by bus, so that’s a plus point. Food and lodging Breakfast was the same as every morning, which I enjoyed. Kayra and I got our lunch at Starbucks in the afternoon. We had a Panini with roasted tomato and mozzarella, which I had already eaten two days earlier. In the evening, we went to the Pizzahut, which I had been craving for 3 weeks already, so I was absolutely delighted after eating pizza. All places we went to this day were very pleasant to be. Attractions Today we could choose between the three Kensington museums. Ramona, Sanne and Maaike went to the Natural History Museum. Kayra and I were enjoying the weather outside in the park. I think, the girls have enjoyed their visit to the museum. Anyway, we did enjoy our spot in the park. We also went along the Welling Arch, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the beautiful St James Park. In the evening, we went to Stomp which was really impressive with all the objects making sounds and music, but none of them were instruments. Activities We started the day with the Street Art Tour, which I liked very much. It was around Old Street and the tour guide lead us through the streets. After this, we had the museum visit. After that, we went to Harrods, an amazing warehouse in London with the most expensive brands on earth. It’s kind of paradise in there. Also because they have fudge, that’s so delicious! The next thing was our walk to the Pizzahut and our dinner there. The last activity of the day was Stomp, which was so fantastic! Schedule The schedule wasn’t very tight. We only left on time from the hotel to be in time for the tour and we had to arrive in time for Stomp. The other activities didn’t have a really structured schedule. We left in the morning around 9 am, which was quite agreeable because we could stay in bed longer. 12 am we went to the museums and we had until 13.30. At 4 pm we went to the Pizzahut and at 19.15 we had to be at Stomp. Leisure time All over the day, we had quite some leisure time. Between the Street Art Tour and dinner we could almost go wherever we liked, like lunch and shopping. After getting back at the hotel, we could also relax in the bedrooms and we had a fun nights with other friends while running over. London review Maaike, Sanne, Isla, Ramona, Kayra Friday - 17th of May Food and lodging In the morning we had breakfast and prepared ourselves for the day as all the other days, but this day we also had to clean our rooms and pack our bags. Our last breakfast was served from 07.30 on. I had my usual cereal with yoghurt and some apple juice, but I enjoyed it. We had to be at the bus between 08:00 and 08:25, so we could leave at 08:30. We managed to leave in time and we drove for about two and a half hours. It was quite comfy in the bus and we enjoyed ourselves by watching TV, talking and listening to music. When we arrived at the ferry, we were unlucky to just miss the ferry of 11:40. This meant we had to wait for a while. When we finally got on the ferry at 12:05, we had to leave to the upper deck just like the last time. There was a tough wind once again, so the boat was moving a lot, but we had no trouble keeping our cool. We just enjoyed ourselves by chilling and by playing cards games. When we arrived in Calais, we had to enter the bus again and we left for Hellevoetsluis. In the bus a movie was played which was called ‘The Flood’ which wasn’t spectacular, but it was okay. We weren’t stuck in any traffic jams until we reached the Netherlands, so the trip went quite fast. But when we got stuck in a traffic jam, we had to stop at a MacDonald’s to avoid worse. We ate their too and I enjoyed it big time! We left again around 19:15 and arrived at school at 20:30. Transportation Bus trip: An 8, because it was a comfortable bus and a movie was displayed, but it is still an ± 8 hourlasting bus trip. Ferry: A 7,5, because the boat of Monday was cleaner and less busy. Nonetheless, the seats were comfortable and you could buy food, so the trip was fine.
