What are the goals of the GTM?


Is to be able to read written literature in the target language.
Studying a foreign language provides students with good mental exercise.
What are the role of the students and teacher?


The teacher is the authority in the classroom.
The students do as the teacher says and learn as the teacher wants them to.
What are some of the characteristics of the teaching process?




Students are taught to translate from one language to another.
Students study grammar deductively.
Student study grammatical paradigms.
They memorize native language equivalents for target language vocabularies.
What is the nature of the student-teacher and the student-student interaction?

Most of the interaction is from the teacher to the students. There is less interaction with the
students.
How are the feelings of the students dealt with?

There are no principles of this method.
How is the language and culture viewed?


Literary language is considered superior to spoken language therefore that what students study.
Culture is viewed as consisting of literature and fine arts.
What areas of language and language skills are emphasized?



Vocabulary and grammar are emphasized.
Reading and writing are emphasized.
There is less attention on speaking and listening.
What is the role of the students’ native language?


The meaning of the target language is translated into their native language.
The language that is used in the class is the native language.
How is evaluation accomplished?


Written tests in which students translate passages are often used.
Questions about grammar and about culture are also common.
How does the teacher respond to students errors?

Giving the correct answers to the students is very important.
