Research Assistant “Exploration of NOS2 & COX2 associated activation of TLR4 & EGFR signalling in breast cancer via pro-survival signals and immune polarization” Lambe Institute for Translational Research Ref. No. NUIG 005-16 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Research Assistant in the Discipline of Pathology at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research. This position is funded by Breast Cancer Now, UK and is available from 1st March 2016 to contract end date of 28thst of February 2017. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Sharon Glynn, Lecturer in Pathology at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research (http://www.nuigalway.ie/ourresearch/people/medicine/sharonglynn/). This Breast Cancer Now funded project seeks to further elucidate mechanisms by which inflammatory mediators promote oestrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer progression and poor survival. We previously reported association between inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2) and poor outcome in ER-negative tumours. In tumours aberrant NOS2 induction facilitates tissue remodelling and stimulates neovascularisation. Also involved in inflammation and wound healing is cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2). We demonstrated that COX2 is associated with Akt activation and poor outcome in ER-negative tumours. Job Description: The successful candidate will assist Dr. Glynn and the postdoctoral researcher assigned to the project, Dr. Pablo Garrido in studies into NOS2 induction of COX2 through transactivation of EGFR and its consequences on pro-survival signaling, metastatic potential and modulation of the immune response. Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and experience in the field of cancer biology is essential. Applicants must have a BSc in the Life Sciences. The ideal candidate would have experience in cell culture of tumour and mesenchymal stem cells, handling human tissue specimens, immunohistochemistry, extraction of DNA, RNA and proteins from FFPE specimens, qRT-PCR and construction of tissue microarrays. Additionally experience in Western blotting and the assessment of differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells into their different lineages would be advantageous. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new products; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
