MOTION PICTURE AND THEATRE STUDIES—SEMESTER 2 DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT SPRING 2016 Instructors: Ms. Mindy Nelsen and Mrs. Timbre Greenwood Room: #144 and #117 Phone: (801) 610-8805 Email: mnelsen@alpinedistrict.org; tgreenwood@alpinedistrict.org Class Website: http://tgreenwood.weebly.com/film-and-drama.html Meeting Times: By appointment only Course Description: There are two basic goals in film and theatre education: finding meaning in works of film and theatre through the study and appreciation of film and theatre as an art form and constructing meaning in works of film and theatre through the study and skill development of techniques in the creation of these art forms. Students will learn to analyze film and theatre through the use of various critical templates. Materials: Students will be expected to keep and bring paper and writing utensil to each class period. They will also need a pencil for writing in scripts. We will provide students with scripts and other necessary materials one time. Should they lose their materials, students will be required to replace them on their own, at their own cost. Class Fees: $15.00. This was charged at registration. Rules: Class rules are designed to make the classroom and theatre spaces safe and conducive to learning. Inappropriate language, derogatory comments and destructive behavior toward school or others’ property or persons will be appropriately penalized. No cell phone usage of any kind will be allowed during class time. Any cell phone taken out for any reason in class will be promptly confiscated and the student will be fined $5.00 by the financial office in order to have the phone returned. No food or drink (except water) is allowed in the classroom or in the auditorium. No gum chewing is allowed while performing. Tests, Assignments and Extra Credit: A written or performance test will be given at the end of each unit and a comprehensive final project will be given at the end of the semester. If a student misses a performance/test, due to absence or tardy not cleared through the attendance office, they will receive an F on that exam or performance. This includes the final for the term. Periodic quizzes will also be given on material studied during class periods and assigned homework readings. Students must complete all classroom assignments including performances, peer critiques, film analyses, self-evaluation, written work, and group presentations. Additionally, each student must see Lehi High School’s production of Inherit the Wind and In the Heights this semester. There will be an in-class exam that will take place the class period after the closing of the show. Attendance at all drama department productions is required and will count as part of the students’ final grades. If students cannot attend productions because of financial constraints, they need to talk to Ms. Nelsen or Mrs. Greenwood prior to the opening performance, and we will figure out a way for them to earn entrance. There will be few, if any, opportunities throughout the year to earn extra credit. Students must take advantage of these opportunities as they arise, because special extra credit will not be given at the end of the term in order to “save” grades. Students need to stay up on their work from the very beginning. Late Work and Grading Procedures: All assignments are to be turned in when called for on the due date to receive full credit. Assignments handed in at the end of class will not be accepted. LATE WORK DEDUCTIONS: Students who submit an assignment one class period late will receive 90% (10% deduction) of the points earned for that assignment. Any assignment turned in after that point will receive 60% (40% deduction) of the points earned up until the end of that unit. Once the final assessment for a particular unit has been submitted, assignments from that unit will no longer be accepted. (This typically takes place around the mid-point of each term.) All work must be completed if students are absent due to a school-sponsored activity. Any scheduled test must be taken before the next class period. All work must be completed if a student absent due to illness or family obligation. Students will have two class periods to make up any assignments given during an absence before late work deductions will be taken; missed exams must be taken immediately upon return. If students are absent when an assignment is due, he/she must either: send it with a friend, email it to the teacher, or turn it in immediately upon return, otherwise, late work deductions will be taken. Students will NOT be chased down for their work. It is up to STUDENTS to get missed assignments from the website, from another student or from the teacher. STUDENTS are also responsible for making sure that they are turned in on time. Again, the teacher will NOT chase students down for their work. Students will not be given ANY credit for any work missed unless their absences are excused with the office. Remediation: Remediation will be available to students in need. Remediation must be student initiated and include a conference with the student’s parent or guardian, the signing of a contract and completion in a timely manner. We want each student to pass my class and we are willing to work with them on improving. A pass/fail grade or letter grade may be available depending on the circumstances. Attitude and Effort: We are excited about this class and the opportunity to work with our students! Theatre and film are media where teamwork and support are absolutely necessary; therefore, it is imperative that the classroom be a safe and supportive environment for all students. Working well with others is a necessity. Attitude and effort are closely monitored and figured into students’ participation grades. This class is participation oriented, so any student unwilling to attempt to perform in front of the class will not do very well in the course. Each student is graded based on his or her own effort and will not be compared to other students in the class. Students must exhibit a mature and professional attitude concerning the atmosphere in the classroom. This includes taking responsibility for personal items as well as tools, costumes, props and other equipment belonging to the school, to the teachers, or to fellow students. In addition, because this class is largely based on watching films, students are expected to be attentive during the screening of movies. Attendance: Attendance is the most important element for succeeding in this class. Every day is important!!! Because every day counts as 2 regular school days, missing class once is like missing twice. Attendance and punctuality are critical. If a student is not in class on time, he or she will lose participation points for the day. In addition, screening missed films can be very difficult at times, and so we recommend that students make a concerted effort to be here, on time, every day. We adhere strictly to the LHS attendance policy as outlined in the Student Handbook. ***School excused absences for field trips and extracurricular activities do not count against a student; however, he/she is still responsible for work missed that day.*** IF A STUDENT IS FOUND TO BE TRUANT AT ANY POINT IN THE TERM, HE/SHE WILL FORFEIT ANY RIGHT FOR LATE SUMBISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS. Grading: Each assignment will be graded on a straight percentage and the students’ final grade will be based on the total of all scores. The grading scale for this course is as follows: A 95-100 B+ 87-89 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69 A- 90-94 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 63-66 F 0-59 B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D60-62 As a part of this grade, students will receive points each day for being present, being on time, and being attentive. If students are not in class, not on time, or sleeping/talking through films, there is no way to make up these points, so we recommend that you are sure to take your attendance and attentiveness seriously this semester. (Students will not be penalized for absences due to school-sponsored activities.) Cheating & Plagiarism: It is important for each student to demonstrate personal integrity and lifelong learning skills. Therefore, cheating will not be tolerated. Any student that participates in cheating may receive a zero on that assignment (i.e. test, quiz, assignment or homework). Cheating or plagiarism (copying un-cited work) could result in failing academic credit. Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing will be required to participate in a meeting with the teacher and parent or guardian. Optional Activities: Students are welcome to participate in competition teams and other department productions both onstage and in tech crew. Our school is a member of the International Thespian Society. The drama club (Pioneer Players) sponsors theatre related activities all school year for its members. Pioneer Players members will also be admitted one time only, free of charge, to each LHS drama production. Students interested in joining are required to have their parents sign a club disclosure document and pay a $15.00 fee to the financial office to join. Extra credit is available for membership. Students are also invited to participate in several outside class activities. Some of these activities may require travel, auditions and/or fees to participate. While there is a high possibility that some films used in class may not be found on this list, the majority of the curricular content is listed on the back because we wanted parents to be aware ahead of time what will be shown in class. In addition, as some of the films are quite old, there are some films that are not rated; this is due to a lack of standardized rating system at the time of creation and is not to be confused with the crude and unedited “unrated” versions of films found in stores today.
