SCARBOROUGH CAMPUS
ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL (STUDENTS)
JOB DESCRIPTION
Context
Together with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and other members of the Executive and
Senior Management Group (SMG) (which includes the Deans of faculty and the
Principal of the Scarborough campus), the Associate Principal (Students) will
contribute to the delivery and promotion of the University’s vision, mission, strategic
objectives, KPIs and values, through contributions to the development and
implementation of the University’s strategic, annual and other plans, and through the
promotion and enhancement of the University’s reputation, stature and image.
Given the diverse nature of the academic and related activities of the Scarborough
campus, it is necessary that the Campus Principal should be assisted in his
responsibilities. The campus will therefore have an Associate Principal that will
assist the Principal and have delegated powers in this regard. The Associate
Principal acts on behalf of the Principal, with a delegated authority from the Principal.
Academic governance of programmes based at Scarborough is through the various
Faculties, with some agreed locally delegated responsibilities and with support from
the locally based converged administration. The Campus Principal works in close
liaison with the Deans of faculty on matters pertaining to Scarborough. It is foreseen
that the Associate Principal will liaise with relevant Associate Deans of faculty and
relevant PVCs with regard to the various portfolios (Research and Enterprise,
Learning and Teaching as well as Engagement).
The Associate Principal may be asked to deputise for the Principal from time to time.
A clear set of delegations will then govern the deputising action.
The success of the University in achieving the strategic goals and objectives set out
in its vision and Strategic Plan depends on its ability to implement the Plan. As a
leader within the Scarborough campus, the Associate Principal represents the
leadership and management level that is in direct and daily contact with academic
and other staff as well as students. The Associate Principal therefore has a pivotally
important role in supporting other academics on campus in ensuring that the
objectives and goals of the Strategic Plan are delivered.
Attainment of the institutional KPIs, substantial growth in the RGC (research, grants
and contract) income, the integration of learning and teaching with research and
enterprise, promotion of the interdisciplinary themes and internationalisation are
examples of areas that need to be pursued with vigour.
It is essential that the Associate Principal fully supports the vision and objectives of
the University’s Strategic Plan, and has the ability to lead and inspire students and
staff at the Scarborough Campus to ensure the Plan can be implemented.
