Safety Statement
Thank you for entering Kerry Head of the River!
The safety of competitors, volunteers and the public is of most
importance. Instructions below provide information for the duration of
the Kerry Head of the River. Killorglin Rowing Club will hold Kerry
HOR under the rules and regulations of Rowing Ireland Safety Code.
In order to make the event safe and enjoyable for all parties
participating please note the following:
The Event Organisers will endeavor to provide a safe environment within the Rowing
Ireland Safety Code although competitors, coxswains and coaches are reminded that persons
using River Laune do so entirely at their own risk and are solely responsible for:
1. Their own safety, remembering that they have a duty of care to themselves and any third
party both on the water and on land.
2. Ensuring that any equipment (boats, blades, buoyancy aids, hells retrains, bow ball etc.)
are safe and prepared to the standards as required under the Rowing Ireland Rules.
3. Ensuring that their boats comply with the buoyancy requirements.
4. Deciding whether or not they are competent to use the water course in the prevailing
weather conditions; this decision may be taken by the individual or with their coach/crew.
5. Ensuring that they can swim at least 100m in accordance with the requirements under
Rowing Ireland
6. Ensuring that they are registered members of Rowing Ireland (IARU) and they have their
rowing card with them.
All competitors, coaches and other participants are also reminded
of the following:
1. The event will be run over 4000 m and all participating athletes are expected to be
capable of rowing required distance.
2. Killorglin Rowing Club and Kerry HOR organisers are not taking any responsibility
for deliberate, foolish act committed by person or persons that would put them or any
other individual at risk with regard to safety.
3. All coxswains must wear a life jacket or a buoyancy aid at all times when on the
water. It must be of approved design by Rowing Ireland.
4. A coach shall ensure that every member of the crews, of which he has charge, is
aware of the appropriate safety procedures at all times.
5. During the hours of non-racing there will not be an event safety boat on the river.
6. Participants must make their own safety arrangements before & after the day’s racing.
7. During the race, crews should keep generally to the left-hand side of the river and
crews needing to overtake should do so on the right. All crews should remain aware
of other crews at all times. Crews being overtaken should give way if necessary (e.g.
in situations of multiple overtaking).
8. The Event Safety Officer is in charge of safety at the race site. Any instructions
issued by the safety officer, verbal or written, must be adhered to. The penalty for
non-compliance is disqualification.
9. All access roads/routes must be kept clear at all times for emergency vehicles.
10. When in the boating area, or when boating/de-boating, extra care is needed and right
of way should be given to other participants and members of the public so as not to
cause inconvenience, distress or injury to third parties. The slip are must be kept clear
at all times.
11. All clubs shall ensure that they carry and maintain adequate comprehensive insurance
to cover personal injury to members on and off the water and personal injury and
damage to property or third parties.
12. Any accident should be drawn to the attention of the nearest Official as soon as
possible that will be able to contact the emergency services/assistance.
13. Coxes and Captains meeting will be held before the competition commences.
Coxe/Captains meeting will take place at 8:30am in Killorglin RC.
14. A first aid kit will located at the race site in a location to be identified at briefing.
