Dear Parents, Carers and Children
Many thanks to the families who brought-in shoe boxes to be sent to children
who would otherwise not have a present on Christmas Day. The final number of
shoeboxes distributed from school will be announced in next week’s School
News.
Congratulations to the Y3/4 basket-ball players who went to St. Bernard’s School on Monday
evening. They played in a tournament in which they were runners-up.
Good Luck also to the Y1/2 mat ball players who will be going on their first outing to a sporting
event at St. Bernard’s School on Thursday of next week- exciting times ahead!!
St. Mary Magdalene’s Church Fair will take place in our school hall from 2.00pm tomorrow.
This is the parish’s main fund raising event of the year. Please come along and offer a little
support.
There will be a meeting of St. Mary’s Friends of The School at 9.00am on Thursday November 19 th
to discuss the organisation of our school Christmas Fair which is due to take place after school on
Friday December 4th. If you have any good ideas for fund-raising, please come along to the
meeting. If you can’t make this time, please drop your fund raising ideas into the school office
beforehand.
As children begin to think about Christmas presents, please be aware of the need to keep
your child/children safe.
If buying computer games, dvd’s, films and videos, please give regard to the PEGI-rating (PanEuropean Game Information). This is an age rating system which applies in 30 countries. The
system is supported by the major console manufacturers. Age-ratings provide guidance to parents
to help them decide whether or not to buy specific products.
The PEGI labels indicate one of the following age-levels; 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18. The labels provide a
reliable indication of the suitability of the content, it does not indicate the level of difficulty or skill
involved in playing the game. It is alarming to hear many very young children in school talking
about playing games aimed at adults i.e. 18 years of age. The classification is applied to a stage
where there may be depictions of gross violence, which is not appropriate for children of PrimarySchool age.
If buying a smart phone, talk to the mobile-provider about parental controls. These may not be
automatically switched on, so you may need to look at the provider’s website for support.
If buying a tablet, make sure that the account is set up by a parent or carer so that they can
authorise the content that is downloaded. Look also at the age-ratings of apps as some will not be
suitable.

The same applies to popular sites such as You-Tube, Snapchat or Facebook.
A couple of useful websites which cover such issues are:

Please try to ensure that your child/ren is/are kept as safe as possible and allowed to grow-up at an
appropriate rate.
In the lead-up to Christmas, please find below a list of dates to put in your diary.
