Safe Work Procedure Title and basic description
Use microscope
Title:
Description: examine microscope slides
Associated risk assessment title and location: RA Working with electrical equipments 017 located in room 209B
Describe the activity or process





Switch on power button in front (OLYMPUS BH-2) or on the side (OLYMPUS CX40) of microscope.
Place the slide on the stage.
Focus the image by moving up and down the stage. Change magnification by using different objectives.
Switch off the microscope, clean up the stage and objective with 70% alcohol if necessary.
Put the plastic cover back on the microscope when finished.
List all resources required including plant,
chemicals, personal protective clothing and
equipment, etc


Slides, 70% alcohol, Kim wipes tissue
Light microscope
List potential hazards and risk controls including
specific precautions required


Poisoning from mounting median – always wait for the slides drying up enough before examining
Potentials of injury by glass slides – all users are trained and handle slides carefully.

List emergency shutdown instructions

Microscope has “OFF” switch that can be used in emergency.

Shut all electrical equipment off at power point in case of emergency.
List clean up and waste disposal requirements
Dispose Kim wipes tissue in normal waste bin
