POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, the Bus Driver operates gas or diesel buses to provide
safe and efficient transportation for tribal members to attend tribal functions and other approved
meetings or events. The bus driver acts as a fundamental member of the NHBP Membership
Services Team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete,
and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities and position titles as it deems necessary
to meet the needs of the government.








At start of shift, obtains route assignment(s) and collects BUS - Driver Vehicle Inspection
Report (DVIR)
Inspects bus to observe any visual defects and checks operating systems, fluids, brakes, horn,
windshield wipers, lights, first-aid kits, emergency flashers, and door-opening devices before
starting trip or route.
Adheres to a schedule to pick up Tribal Members and follows a time frame in order to make
their stops.
Transport Tribal members to pre-identified locations. Picks up and discharges at stops, stations
or destination, following prescribed route and safety rules. Announces all stops. At end of
route, checks bus interior for any forgotten personal items, removes waste items and cleans
interior of bus.
Reports to starting point of assigned route fifteen (15) minutes before scheduled departure
time.
Answers questions about routes and service.
Completes paperwork and reports, provides directions to Tribal Members, collects Tribal
Member Paperwork as needed, stock the bus with needed supplies, and other important tasks
necessary to run a bus smoothly.
Helps elderly or handicapped persons to enter and exit the bus.

Reports emergency or imminent safety conditions to dispatcher or Fleet manager via mobile
radio or phone.
Completes BUS-DVIR at beginning of shift, noting any safety items, customer complaints, or
comments.
He/she must remain informed of the traffic, and any variations in the schedule due to
unexpected events.
Reports accidents immediately to Fleet Manager, requesting police or ambulance service as
needed. Assists injured persons from first-aid kit until these services arrive. Completes NHBP
accident report.
Responsible for the safety of the people they are transporting. He/she must be always alert and
focus on the driving task, as well as know any possible driving conditions ahead, and weather
conditions.
Observes all state and local speed and safety regulations and NHBP customer service and
safety policies.
May be assigned to switch buses around transportation garage or move buses in and out of
maintenance line.
May be assigned to chartered bus trips or bus tours requiring absences of up to 10 days.
May be required to operate other GSA or tribally-owned vehicles to include no more than 10
hours within a twenty-four hour period.
Provides general support to Membership Services Department staff as required.
Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An individual must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform each essential function
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or
ability required. To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the minimum
qualifications.





High school diploma, GED or equivalent experience to support knowledge, skills and abilities.
At least 21 years of age with an excellent driving record, as verified through the State of
Michigan. Must hold a currently valid CDL-P license.
Ability to pass General Services Administration driving test.
Ability to drive at night.
Must be able to travel.

Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment MDOT examination and complete
and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening; must not have been
found guilty of, or pled guilty or no contest to, any felony or misdemeanor offense under
federal, state or tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation,
prostitution, or other crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children; must be
able to successfully pass a drug screening by means of hair sample.
Two years’ experience driving commercial transportation vehicles, requiring a CDL-P license.
Basic knowledge and understanding of vehicle safety regulations.
Submit to preliminary inspection of an unrestricted driver’s license (less than 6 points).
Submit to an annual NHBP inspection of an employee’s driving record.
Watch video (SAFE drivers) and pass related driving test. (GSA certifiable)
Provide a copy of proof of insurance (showing that an insurer is willing to insure the driver
and they have insurance on their vehicle)
Have no medical condition, medications or doctors’ orders prohibiting vehicle operation.
Anyone driving GSA vehicles is required to give the insurance provider your full name,
driver’s license number, the state you are licensed in, and DOB so the insurance company can
run a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for your driving record, if you have six (6) points or more
you will not be covered under our insurance and would be ineligible for GSA vehicle use or
transporting.
Driving privileges of incumbents shall be terminated immediately for the following reasons:
arrested for, charged with, or convicted of reckless driving, DWI, or DUI; arrested for, charged
with, or convicted of a criminal offense related to a traffic incident involving alcohol or drugs,
including but not limited to vehicular homicide, manslaughter or endangerment; and/or
disqualification from holding a state drivers’ license for any reason.
Must follow the rules and regulations that have been established by the Department of
Transportation concerning working hours and other issues.
Ability to work varied days, hours, times and schedules depending on Tribal needs and
activities; a trip/tour may take a day, a few hours, or several days. Ability to work part-time
or full-time 5, 6, or weekends/holidays.
Bus drivers may be required to drive small buses of 15 passengers or larger buses up to 25
passengers.
Ability to become trained and certified in CPR and other life saving techniques; willingness to
assist in emergency situations with life support techniques, traffic control, triage,
documentation, emergency reporting and other emergency related responsibilities as qualified.
Ability to carry , handle, secure, dislodge, locate, store and maintain security for large personal
items belonging to NHBP, Tribal Members, passengers, and agencies.
Excellent verbal communication skills.
Friendly, customer-oriented personality as demonstrated through past work experience.
Bus Drivers must show courtesy and a polite demeanor to the Tribal Members, other
passengers, community members, Tribal Council, co-workers and Superiors, and external
agencies.
Must be able to work independently; willing to work shifts that vary from day to night and
operate seven days a week. Must be able to work flexible hours and on short notice when
necessary or as directed.
A willingness to initiate contacts with new people.

Ability to comprehend and abide by Tribal, federal and other relevant environmental
regulations/codes.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Will receive annual training in HIPAA regulations
and related confidentiality issues.
Must be able to adjust schedule as needed or required.
Have the ability to use discretion and problem solving methods in the course of conflict
management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


Familiarity with Native American culture, traditions, language and values.
Five years’ experience providing professional transportation service.

WORK CONDITIONS
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee

Incumbent must be able to work extended hours varying weather conditions while driving. Must
be able to work safely with transportation equipment and vehicles. Must be able to interact with
fellow team members, tribal members and contractors, following verbal and written instructions.
Must be able to be on-call for afterhours maintenance needs, and work flexible hours as needed.
Exerts up to 60 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move
objects such as luggage, coolers, outer gear and other outing or field/day trip items. Must have
physical strength adequate to maneuver the bus and assist elderly or disabled passengers.
Regularly exposed to dust, odors, oil, fumes and noise.
Requires mobility, frequent walking, standing, sitting stationary. The employee is frequently
required to talk or hear; as a driver the employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel
and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision and ability to focus on road and traffic conditions for extensive periods
of time. Must have quick reflexes when encountered with ever changing traffic conditions.
The noise level in the work environment can change from quiet to loud, based on the
circumstances.
