This school board has the power, authority and duty to be the custodians of real and
personal school property and to manage, control and care for same, both during the school
term and during vacation. S37-7-301-(c) (1987)
The school board of this district recognizes that the school plant serves as a vehicle in the
implementation of the total educational program, providing the necessary facilities for
delivering planned instructional program and services within a safe, comfortable, physical
environment.
This school board expects each school to be clean, safe and in good repair. Rooms and
specialized areas shall be available and equipped to provide for scheduled instructional
activities. Furniture and storage areas which support the educational program shall be
provided.
When adequate space, furnishings, personnel, equipment, etc. is not available for
implementation of the approved instruction and/or ancillary programs of the district, it shall
be the responsibility of the superintendent and his staff to report said deficiencies to the
board and to work cooperatively with the board in remediating said deficiencies.
The superintendent shall ensure compliance at all times with the following compulsory
standards:

The physical arrangement and furnishings of each classroom are inviting and
conducive to the furthering of teaching and learning.
 student work displayed
 bulletin boards (attractive, timely, instructionally focused)
 clean, free of litter
 furniture/fixtures
 other

Fully charged and recently inspected fire extinguishers of the appropriate type are
accessible every 75 feet and also located in the following strategic areas:
 cafeteria: 2A rating
 hallways: Type 2A 10BC rating is the same as a 5 ABC type
 heater/boiler room: Type 2A 10BC rating
 science labs (with gas): Type 10BC rating
 shops: Type 2A 10BC rating

The school has a current disaster plan and conducts regular safety drills (fire (8),
tornado). MS Code 37-11-5
4.
A regular schedule of inspection and maintenance insures that the building and
grounds school site:
 building exterior (maintenance, paint-finish, roof, etc.)
 bus loading areas
 doors (handles, hinges, knobs, etc.)
 windows
 drainage system

Sufficient classrooms are provided for the number of students enrolled.
6. Specialized instructional areas are available and equipped to provide for scheduled
instructional activities (such as music, testing, speech, etc.)
7. Protective eye devices are available and worn by the students and staff in dangerous
situations (where applicable). MS Code 37-11-49
8. All chemicals are routinely inspected and clearly labeled to indicate contents and
possible hazards (places to check: Maintenance room, storage rooms, science labs,
etc.)
9. The overall condition (cleanliness, acoustics, sanitation, floors, ceilings, windows,
furnishings, heating, lighting, plumbing, toilets, ventilation, etc.) of the following
areas and resources ensures a clean, safe, and functional environment for students
and staff. Buildings, interior:
 administrative offices
 auditorium/stage
 cafeteria
 classrooms
 clinics
 custodian’s room/area
 guidance areas
 gymnasium
 halls/hallways (lockers where applicable)
 library media center
 science lab (where applicable)
 teacher’s lounge
 restrooms
 storage areas
 other areas
