In this class, students will continue developing their ability to communicate in Spanish in everyday, practical situations that they might encounter both in the U.S. and abroad. Along with the development of oral skills, students will also work on the other 3 vital components of language: reading, writing and listening comprehension. Students will actively engage themselves in pair/group activities to express themselves in basic situations. Classroom time will be used for intensive language practice in meaningful contexts. (i.e. applying important grammatical concepts, essential vocabulary, and cultural norms needed to maintain basic communication.) Class time will consist of communication activities following grammatical explanations. Students are expected to study and complete assigned workbook, video, lab and textbook activities outside of class. The class will be conducted in Spanish and students should attempt to use Spanish as much as possible. Prerequisites: Elementary I and II at Kirkwood or their equivalent Course Materials Needed: Vistas:Introducción a la lengua española 4th edition Student Activity Manuals (video, workbook and lab) Learning Outcomes, Objectives, and Course Competencies: At the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Understand a native Spanish-speaker 2. “negotiate for meaning”, that is, ask questions and work in Spanish to figure out a message that is not well understood 3. Engage in a variety of conversations in Spanish for selfexpression and explanation of experiences (in all tenses), hypothetical situations, and indicative vs. subjunctive moods 4. Read selected authentic texts in Spanish and be able to comprehend and discuss content 5. Write clearly and comprehensively about themselves and/or other assigned topics for self-expression 6. Develop cross-cultural communication skills and an appreciation for Hispanic cultures These objectives can be realized only through your active participation both in and out of class. In other words, you must actively prepare your homework PRIOR to the class period and while in class, you must actively contribute to the activities being practiced. Course RequirementsAsistencia- Regular attendance and active participation are crucial for passing this class. The student is responsible for all make up work, announcements and materials covered in class. Participación- Class participation will be primarily based on your attendance, participation in classroom activities, use of Spanish during class, and contribution to group activities and projects. Pruebas- there will be a test at the end of each Lección, for a total of 6 quizzes. The quizzes will cover material from the contextos, fotonovela, cultura, estructura, lectura, and panorama sections of each Lección and may be in the format of listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, and /or writing. Tarea- You will need to keep up daily with the student manual. The tarea consists of 5 sections: Workbook, Video (Panorama cultural), Video (Fotonovela), textbook, and Lab Manual. The laboratory sections require you to listen to the audio on the Supersite site that goes with textbook materials. Homework must be turned in the day it is due. Homework is graded for completion 5 points or zero points. Composiciones- There is a section entitled Tema in the Escritura section of each Lección of the textbook. You will be required to write a composition containing 100 words or more based on one of these topics using the vocabulary and grammatical concepts studied in that Lección. Please refer to the aforementioned KCC Plagiarism Policy. The use of any electronic/internet translation program or any person for proofreading/correction purposes is prohibited. You will be graded on content, organization, language/grammar, and vocabulary. You may use a traditional dictionary and your textbook materials. Please type these entries, double-spaced (every other line, so I have room for comments). All papers must be dated and denote the specific topic and lección number from the textbook. Examen final-There will be a final comprehensive exam. Remember that learning a language is always comprehensive; that is, each new lesson builds on previously studied material. Although the focus for each Prueba will involve mostly the new material since the previous exam, it is critical that you regularly review previous material. All exams may test listening comprehension, reading, speaking, written work (grammar) and culture. Presentación Oral- Each student must prepare presentations based on one of the contexts from Lecciones 13-18. Presentations will be given to the class and may consist of groups of two students. The presentation topic will be based on the lesson title. For example, if a group chooses Lección 13, the presentation will be about “la naturaleza/el medio ambiente”. Any aspect/specific country/particular issue about the topic may be explored and presented using some sort of visual aide. You will be graded on: Content 10 pts. Grammar 10 pts. Pronunciation 10 pts. Examen oral- This oral exam will consist of a paired interview/interaction with a classmate (similar to regular classroom communicative activities) in the form of a role-play or task with your partner. The evaluation criteria will include such things as comprehensibility, appropriateness (turn-taking), grammar, information conveyed and vocabulary. Detailed guidelines and sample role plays (with underlying grammar) will be provided as the term progresses. Late Work/Make-up Test Policy: Homework must be turned in the day it is due.
