Laboratory safety:
It is extremely important for each student to be familiar with any safety regulations listed in
the laboratory manual, and posted on the walls in the laboratory. Some laboratories require
the use of caustic chemicals that may destroy clothing, burn your skin, or harm your eyes.
Do not take chances! The best safety begins with common sense. When in doubt, ask
your laboratory instructor how to handle potentially harmful materials.
Laboratory attendance:
No one is permitted to attend a laboratory other than the one for which he or she is registered.
Attendance will be taken at each laboratory meeting. To be considered in attendance, a
student must be present at the beginning, during, and the end of each laboratory meeting.
There are no makeup laboratories, meaning the grade for the lab notebook will be zero.
There is one makeup quiz allowed; however, that quiz score will be divided into half of the
score earned. If two laboratories are missed, even if there are excuses, the total grade for
laboratory will be considered zero. Be aware that Dr. Showalter may have a grading policy
that automatically will issue an “F” for the course if the laboratory grade is zero. Check
with Dr. Showalter for his grading policy.
Quizzes and Lab Notebook:
There will be 4 quizzes. Each quiz will include 11 questions, one of which you can choose
to skip. Each of the four quizzes will be worth 20 points. The quizzes are closed book
and will be taken at the beginning of the laboratory meeting.
Your lab notebook will be graded weekly and a total of 20 points can be earned. Write your
name in your lab notebook so that if you leave it in the lab we will know to whom it belongs.
Grading:
The final percentage grade earned in the lab will be provided to Dr. Showalter. Check with
Dr. Showalter for the proportion of lab grade in your final grade of this class.
