Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association 220 S. Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60604-2508 HISTORY The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's distinguished history began in 1891, when Theodore Thomas, then the leading conductor in America and a recognized music pioneer, was invited by Chicago businessman Charles Norman Fay to establish a symphony orchestra here. Orchestra Hall—the long-standing dream of Theodore Thomas—was designed by CSO trustee and Chicago architect Daniel H. Burnham and completed in 1904, at a cost of $750,000. Thomas' aim to establish a permanent orchestra with performance capabilities of the highest quality was realized at the first concerts in October of that year. For nearly the first fourteen years of its history, the Chicago Orchestra performed at the Auditorium Theatre (completed in 1889).
