Therefore, candidates must submit a copy of their initial teaching license to demonstrate initial certification. To document applicants’ readiness for advanced study, we analyze each candidate’s academic record to ensure appropriate foundational knowledge, as demonstrated by a 3.0 undergraduate and education GPA (as required by the URI Graduate School). Using a rubric developed for the application process, we analyze each applicant’s resume, personal statement, and letters of recommendation for experience, success in teaching, and continued professional development. Since dispositions are an integral part of being a professional in the field, we analyze applicants’ personal statements and references (again using a rubric) for evidence of positive dispositions toward teaching and learning. Candidates who meet the criteria on the application rubric are invited for an interview. Each is interviewed by two faculty members, using a standard interview template and rubric. Candidates who meet the interview criteria are accepted into the program. Criteria Successful demonstration of graduate standing as demonstrated by MA/Reading GPA of 3.0 or higher Successful progress toward IRA Standard 1 (Foundational Knowledge) and 2 (Instructional Strategies and Curriculum Materials) Demonstration of competence in language development (EDC527) Prior to Internship Sources of Evidence Evaluators and Review Process IRA Task 1 (Reflective Research Portfolio) for Standard 1 (Foundational Knowledge) IRA Task 5 (Transcript Analysis Project) for Standard 2 (Instructional Strategies and Curriculum materials) IRA tasks 1 and 5 posted to the URI electronic portfolio; Candidates must meet the standard in each category of the task rubrics; Assessment Specialist and Reading Program director review portfolio to ensure tasks have been met; Candidates must achieve a B or better in EDC527 Possible Decisions Proceed to Clinical Practicum; Continue to work toward standard and enter practicum with the next cohort B or better in EDC 527 (Language Study for Teachers of Reading) Rationale: In the reading program, candidates must demonstrate knowledge in several foundational areas prior to engaging in clinical practicum or fieldwork. Candidates demonstrate mastery of IRA Standard 1 (foundational knowledge), and partial mastery of Standard 2 (instructional strategies) through meeting the standard on a reflective research portfolio task and a transcript analysis task, maintaining a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 (B) or better overall, and in courses that where candidates study language development and methods of intervention. Criteria GPA of 3.0 or higher Successful completion of eight (8) IRA tasks Successful completion of Comprehensive Examinations Recommendation for Licensure Sources of Evidence Evaluators and Review Process IRA tasks 1-8 IRA tasks 1-8 posted to the URI electronic portfolio; Candidates Comprehensive must meet the standard in each Examinations category of the task rubrics; Assessment Specialist and Reading Program director review portfolio to ensure tasks have been met; Two faculty assess Comprehensive Exams using SOE Comp Exam rubric Possible Decisions Recommend or do not recommend for licensure Rationale: To be recommended for licensure, candidates must have met IRA’s Standards for Reading Professionals at the Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach level, demonstrated by candidates’ meeting the standard on all IRA-approved tasks. Through these tasks, candidates demonstrate knowledge and skill in (1) Foundational Knowledge, (2) Instructional Strategies and Curriculum Materials, (3) Assessment, (4) Literate Environment, and (5) Professional Development. Each IRA-approved task has a rubric, and candidates must “meet the standard” on all parts of the rubric. (In a case where a candidate did not meet the standard, the candidate would revise and resubmit the particular task within the corresponding course. Candidates are not allowed to continue in the program unless each task is met.) Additionally, candidates must demonstrate competence throughout course and practicum work (not simply the required tasks) by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher. Candidates also must demonstrate their readiness by successfully completing a comprehensive examination.
