Gas Leak/Odor All school personnel, including cafeteria managers and custodians, shall immediately report any gas odor or suspected gas leak to the principal. If an odor is detected outside the building, it may not be necessary to evacuate. STAFF ACTIONS: Notify principal or site administrator. Move students from immediate vicinity of danger. Do not turn on any electrical devices such as lights, computers, fans, etc. If odor is severe, leave the area immediately. If the building is evacuated, take student attendance and report any missing students to Principal/Site Administrator. PRINCIPAL/SITE ADMINISTRATOR ACTIONS: If gas leak is internal, determine need to evacuate the building immediately. Assume incident command and call 911 if needed. Provide school name, address, exact location within the building, your name and phone number and nature of the emergency. Notify the Department of School Safety, who will contact the Superintendent, Public Information Officer and the Safety Management and Emergency Response Team, as needed. Notify the Maintenance Department. Determine whether to move to alternate building location. If extended stay outdoors in inclement weather, contact transportation to provide bus to transport students to partner school or shelter students on buses. Do not return to the building until it has been inspected and determined safe by proper authorities.
