BACKGROUND
Reflecting the Australian Government’s commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, the
Indigenous Staff Scholarships (ISS) program assists in enhancing Indigenous leadership in the higher
education sector by providing professional development opportunities to scholars.
The ISS are directed towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed by higher education
providers and seeking to gain formal higher education qualifications. The objective of the ISS is to develop
Indigenous leadership in the higher education sector through the provision of opportunities for professional
development.
PROGRAM EVALUATION AND MONITORING
In line with the ISS guidelines the program will be monitored to assess its capacity to enable Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander staff to undertake professional development and to increase opportunities for
Indigenous leadership within the higher education sector. The administration of the program will also be
assessed as part of the overall quality process.
Short-term key performance indicators and expected outcomes of the program will indicate that the student:


completed the year of study under the ISS as:
- part of an award course; or
- the completion of an award course ; and
returned to employment (full time or part time) and/or
continued an award course or moved to further studies.
Longer term outcomes of the program will include:


1
an increase in the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff who have undertaken study
which may lead to improved leadership positions; and
an increase in the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff commencing, continuing
and/or completing higher education studies.
Please note that:
