At (credit union name), we are proud of our conservative nature when it comes to making loans. Your money is our money and we take that seriously. We don’t make risky loans just to try to make more of a profit. As I hope you know, we’re a not-for-profit financial institution. That means any profit we make goes back to you in the form of lower interest rates and fewer fees. You may not realize it but credit unions are only allowed to lend 12.25 percent of their assets. This is an arbitrary figure that banks lobbied to have included in our federal charter in 1998. Before 1998, credit unions never had a member business lending cap and never had major problems with the way they lent money because of our conservative nature. Recently we’ve been working to have the lending cap raised from 12.25 percent of assets to 27.5 percent. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he will bring a member business lending bill, S. 2231, up for a vote on the Senate floor. The banks, as you would imagine, are lobbying hard to keep the cap in place. Credit unions have continued to lend while many banks have pulled back. We have money to lend; it’s simply that banks don’t want us to. When you think about that statement, it makes no sense. Here’s where (credit union name) could use your help. We need to let our senators know that allowing credit unions to lend more is the right thing to do. Let Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio or Sens.
