SEDEMENTARY ROCKS Formed when other sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic rocks are exposed to erosion and weathering. Key Words: Compaction and Cementation Clastic: Formed when the elements (water, wind, and ice) break down larger rocks into smaller pebbles, sand, and clay. Conglomerate- Larger pebble sized rocks formed together into a single rock. Feels very rough and bumpy. Breccia- Coarse angular rocks formed by mid to larger sized particles- feels rough. Sandstone- Rocks made of smaller particles- like sand. Feels like sand. Shale- These rocks are composed of the tiniest grains and feel smooth. Sandstone Shale Chemical: Formed when minerals that have been dissolved in water precipitate out of the water and form rocks. Mostly found in marine environments (near water) Often contain fossils Can look glassy, or look like crystals Limestone Biological: Made from compacted organic material and/or plant fragments.
