SEDEMENTARY ROCKS
Formed when other sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic rocks are
exposed to erosion and weathering.
Key Words: Compaction and Cementation
Clastic:
Formed when the elements (water, wind, and ice) break down larger rocks
into smaller pebbles, sand, and clay.
 Conglomerate- Larger pebble sized rocks formed
together into a single rock. Feels very rough and
bumpy.
 Breccia- Coarse angular rocks formed by mid to larger
sized particles- feels rough.
 Sandstone- Rocks made of smaller particles- like sand.
Feels like sand.
 Shale- These rocks are composed of the tiniest grains
and feel smooth.

Chemical:
Formed when minerals that have been dissolved in water precipitate out of
the water and form rocks.
 Mostly found in marine environments (near water)
 Often contain fossils
 Can look glassy, or look like crystals

Made from compacted organic material and/or plant fragments.
