UNIV 100: Time Management: Priorities Objective: To explain the importance of prioritizing in order to fit all tasks in. Materials: Two medium sized clear bowls Water Large sized rocks Medium sized rocks Small rocks Sand Lesson: Put the bowl on a table in front of the class, hide the rest of your materials Fill it with the largest rocks you have and ask the class if it is full You want them to say yes, and then say well what if I add these? Add medium sized rocks to the spaces between the big rocks Ask them if it is full again, and then repeat by adding small rocks, then the sand, then the water. Take out your other bowl and fill it with water. Ask them if it is full and then try to add a little sand or small rocks. Demonstrate that they simply wont fit in or else it will spill. Debrief: Have students make a list of their priorities. The large rocks represent your highest priorities (Work, school, projects etc.) The smaller the rocks get, the lower the priority. (Eating > Partying, Family > friends, etc.) The water and sand are little pleasures, etc. that you can fit in if you get all your other stuff done. If you put the little stuff first, you’ll never be able to get all of your goals accomplished.
