Ashford 6: - Week 5 - Instructor Guidance
"A Leader’s credibility is based in their integrity and others’ belief in it. A leader’s greatest asset
is others’ trust in them. Trust is the currency of leadership." Stephen Covey
PRINCIPLE CENTERED LEADERSHIP
Trust and Influence
What do we mean by leadership? How is it different from management? Organizational
development literature contains a wide range of definitions and descriptions of leadership. Some
people argue that leadership and management are quite different and that they require different
perspectives and skills. Some hold the view that leadership is a facet of management and that
influencing is a facet of leadership.
Effective leadership begins with personal insight and development. Leaders understand how to
build and rebuild trust in an organization. They also understand how to use personal influence
and develop political savvy to network and influence people. They are able to develop strategies
for creating a positive work environment that fosters a commitment to the continuous
improvement in others.
How important is influence as an aspect of leadership? Leaders set a course of direction and
influences people to follow that direction. This being, true a manager may or may not be a
leader. Leaders carry out their roles in a wide variety of styles. Leadership style is influenced by
the individual’s beliefs, values, and assumptions, as well as the organizational culture and the
situation. A few leadership styles that have been identified include autocratic, laissez-faire and
democratic.
There are numerous leadership styles. What is your leadership style? Understanding your own
leadership style is a key aspect to leadership success.
