OBJECTIVES: - Students will be able to recognize the grammar structure in given sentences. -Students will be able to use the grammar structure in reading, writing and speaking. CONTINGENCY PLANS: Should the lesson runs slower than expected, then the teacher will give only half of the class to present their dialogues and go through answer for the last task together with the class. However the lesson should run faster than expected then the teacher will have an additional worksheet to do in class. MATERIALS: Projector, handouts and worksheets. WARM UP STAGE: (5 minutes) INTERACTION [T - S - S] Introduce the topic by creating an Ice Breaker game. The game will start from the teacher asking a student a question and the student will answer the question and then ask the next person a new question and so on. Start from the teacher by asking, ‘Be richest person in the world with no friends or the poorest person in the world with lots of friends?’ Now, repeat the same game using ‘would rather’, ‘Would you rather be the richest person in the world with no friends or the poorest person in the world with lots of friends?’ The next person will answer and ask the question to the next person. STUDY STAGE: (15 minutes) INTERACTION [T – Ss] Tell the students, rather is used as Prefer to show a choice from different options. So, would rather is as same as would prefer, just that after would rather we use the infinitive without to. Then the teacher shows the topic of the lesson through the video attached, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zAw1hK3-3o Teacher may stop the video when they need to give more explanation to the structure and engage the students to the lesson. PRESENTATION STAGE: (15 minutes) INTERACTION: [Ss –Ss, S – S, SS] Hand out sample dialogue to the students about weekends. Divide the class into 2 groups, group A and B. Read the dialogue together. Sample Dialogue: A: So we need to talk about our weekends. B: I know. Would you rather go to the park or to the mall? A: Well, I think I’d rather go to the park than to the mall. There is a lot much to do than just go for shopping. What do you think? B: I’d rather not go to the park as the weather is quite hot nowadays. Which park are you planning to go? A: I don’t know. Would you prefer to go to Atallah or Shallal? B: I’d prefer to go to Shallal. You can find cool places with AC over there. A: That’s a great idea. Both groups read the dialogues given. Students create dialogues using Would Rather. It could be about vacation, holidays or anything. They must use would rather and would prefer. Finally, they present their dialogues to the class. The presentations are short, about 5-8 sentences. Distribute worksheets. Work Sheet (10 minutes) Rewrite these sentences using “would rather” 1.
