Year 6 Writing Workshop English What do your children learn? Speaking and Listening Reading • • • • • Writing • • • • Taught every year. Assessed at the end of each key stage. Phonics - letters and sounds becoming words. Comprehension – understanding of the words. Spelling. Handwriting. Sentence structure and punctuation - accurate writing of sentences. Grammar - choosing the correct words so the sentences make sense. Composition and Effect – writing a text in the correct way to do a job (inform, describe, persuade). New Curriculum September 2014 • What is the National Curriculum? • • A document that tells schools what they must teach. Why is it changing? • The current curriculum is now 14 years old and the Government believe that it is out of date and is no longer satisfactory. What is new? YEAR 6 SPaG Test Handwriting Writing •Use and understanding of grammar. •Use and understanding of technical terms. •Spelling test – now worth 20 marks instead of 7. •Joined, legible and formed correctly. •A move away from word processing. •No test. •Level given must be reflected across several pieces of work. Working Together child home school How To Help Your Child at Home Talk Environment Opportunities Read •Practise ‘good grammar’. •Can’t write in sentences if you don’t speak in sentences. •Quiet place to write – table. •No background noise. •Equipment – paper, pens, pencils, dictionary. •Thank you letters, diaries, shopping lists etc. •Model writing. •Regularly – for enjoyment as well as school books.
