Weapons of Peace
“Weapons of Peace” is set in South Africa in the period
1800-1852. Based on the lives of William and Johanna
Anderson, it is a thrilling story of adventure, trial, romance,
tragedy and faith. William, one of the earliest missionaries
sent out by the London Missionary Society, has been
described as a true friend and champion of the indigenous
peoples of South Africa.
Splendidly researched and sensitively scripted . . .the author brings into purview for his readers a
vivid, moving, sometimes heart-rending but always inspiring picture of pioneer missionary work in
South Africa in the first half of the nineteenth century. I commend to one and all this tender but
telling and triumphant tale of adventure and high achievement for our Lord Jesus Christ. Read and
be inspired. I was.
Michael Cassidy, African Enterprise, South Africa
“The gripping biography about our courageous ancestors ...depicting the beginnings of the long
evangelical missionary heritage of the Anderson family in Southern Africa.
Professor Allan Anderson, University of Birmingham, England
I found “Weapons of Peace” very encouraging and profound. I heartily recommend this book as a
faith builder to encourage God’s people to pursue their God-given vision and dream.
Angus Buchan, South African farmer, evangelist and author (“Faith Like Potatoes”), and founder of
Shalom Ministries.
“An engagingly readable exploration of William and Johanna Anderson’s work among both Griqua
and Khoi, employing ‘weapons of peace’ in often fraught and complicated early nineteenth-century
Christian encounters.
Dr. Deborah Gaitskell, Research Associate, School of Oriental and African Studies, London
This thrilling book moved, enlightened and delighted me! William Anderson was one of the great
early pioneers of the modern missionary movement. ...Peter Anderson, a sixth generation
descendent, has carefully researched and colourfully portrayed the personalities involved to
produce this gem of a biography.
Patrick Johnstone, WEC International, Author Emeritus, Operation World
The seasons of life and ministry lie exposed within these pages: conflict, revival, failure, fruitfulness,
suffering, and sin. And then we discover two people inhabiting those seasons with a stubborn
commitment to dignity, reconciliation, and peace. This creates a story of realism and tenderness
with a resonance in our times and cultures.
Dr. Paul Windsor, Director of Langham Preaching and former Principal of Carey Baptist College,
Auckland, New Zealand.
