PRESS RELEASE Poznań, 17 December 2013 The White Certificate for the Tychy Brewery Kompania Piwowarska is among 102 top Polish companies who are the first to have received energy efficiency certificates, the so-called white certificates. It is thanks to the Tychy Brewery which has invested in energy-saving air compressors. Apart from KP, there is only one other company representing the food industry which can take pride in having the certificate. The production of beer consumes a lot of energy - it is required at the stage of brewing, cooling the finished product, packaging and, finally, storing. However, Kompania Piwowarska has a sustainable approach to using natural resources and therefore the goals of its 10 sustainable development priorities include the reduction of energy and carbon footprint. In order to do so, the company consistently implements solutions designed to improve energy efficiency at its breweries. Just two “white” companies in the food industry Kompania Piwowarska has recently received the white certificate for one of such projects, namely the introduction of energy-saving air compressors with waste heat recovery at the Tychy brewery. The certificate is a confirmation of energy efficiency and it was issued in a tendering process by the Energy Regulatory Office. 209 projects were submitted to the first tender announced by the ERO, but only less than a half of them received a positive opinion and were given the certificates. The elite group included included Kompania Piwowarska and the energy-saving compressors installed at the Tychy brewery. The decision to grant the certificate to KP was a unique distinction to our company as we are one of just two companies representing the food industry to have been selected in the tender. The other food company that can boast the white certificate apart from KP is the Dairy Cooperative Mlekovita. The investment project was implemented at the Tychy Brewery in 2012 and it has already generated significant savings. As a result of the project we have managed to reduce the consumption of energy needed to generate compressed air for brewery purposes down to 1,829,561 kWh per year, while the use of heat was brought down to 6,733 GJ a year. It is equivalent to the amount of energy and heat used by, respectively, 800 and 180 average households. The reduction of thermal energy consumption results from using waste heat produced by air compressors to heat water used at the brewery production departments. The cost of the investment project was more than PLN 2 million. “The Tychy project selected by the ERO is one of the initiatives in our strategy to respond to climate changes. The strategy focuses on several issues, including energy efficiency, moving to cleaner fossil fuels or using renewable energy sources. The measures taken under the strategy are not only environment-friendly, but they also generate financial gains. The white certificate is the best token of it” says Dariusz Garnowski, director of the Tychy brewery. The certificate trades like a stock on an exchange Energy efficiency certificates are not only a kind of distinction and appreciation of company initiatives taken to benefit the environment, but they also serve as a mechanism to stimulate and induce energysaving behaviour. The white certificate can be obtained by projects leading to the highest level of energy efficiency; however, the certificate value can vary. The value is represented as the annual average amount of energy saved as a result of the submitted project and the energy effect is presented as tonnes of oil equivalent or “toe”. The certificate is awarded to individual projects generating annual energy savings in excess of 10 toe, or to a group of projects of the same type that generate a total energy saving effect exceeding 10 toe. In the case of Kompania Piwowarska the effect amounts to 450 toe, which is an outstanding result. The system of white certificates offers an opportunity to companies to acquire funds: a higher energy effect represented as a bigger toe value makes the certificate more valuable on the energy exchange.
