In Tune with Nature Days at Kompania Piwowarska For the seventh time now, Kompania Piwowarska has published its Sustainability Report on progress in the attainment of the Company's 10 sustainability priorities. This time around, the celebrations have taken an unusual form of a series of environmental happening events under the slogan of In Tune With Nature. For Kompania Piwowarska, the yearly disclosure of the Sustainability Report is a pivotal event which deserves a special format. This year, the Company refrained from communicating the event conventionally, i.e. at a press conference, etc., and chose to focus on its employees. Particular emphasis has been placed on the four of the ten sustainability priorities which are concerned with the environment, i.e.: Making more beer using less water Reducing energy and carbon footprints Packaging waste recovery and recycling Waste management streamlining To highlight this focus in its activities, Kompania Piwowarska has come up with the idea to hold employee-centred environment day happenings under the slogan of In Tune With Nature. Apple and mint Starting on 17 October, one-day environmentally-friendly events will be held successively in Poznań, Tychy, Warsaw and Białystok. Employees were surprised by an arrangement of herbs, citrus plants, pallets, non-dyed fabric and grey paper. The decoration was completed with bicycles included to promote environmentally-friendly transport and a shower meant to encourage the viewers to save water. The idea delighted and greatly enthused KP employees. “Our reception area is gorgeous and even tasty owing to the fruit and the herbs. I wish it would always look that way!”, laughed Aneta Karmelita, Assistant to President of KP’s Management Board. “Such a positive campaign is very persuasive in promoting an environmentally friendly lifestyle and making people change their ways.” The biggest attraction of the In Tune with Nature Days were eight mimes from the Oczy ku niebu Theatre who dressed up as the Company’s Green People (who have been part of the In Tune With Nature campaign from the very start). Kompania Piwowarska has conducted its employee environmental education programme since 2007. The Green People are its symbol, included in the logo and given their own space in the internal social network “Small Beer” where they educate employees on ecology. During the events, the green people came in pairs, each representing a different environmental priority. Dressed in white and green with mysterious smiles on their faces, the silent actors greeted KP employees in the morning, presenting them with apples. For the rest of the day, they roamed the company offices handing out pots with herbs, applied stickers with In Tune With Nature principles and playing out scenes illustrating environmentally-friendly behaviours. When held at KP, the environment day provided employees with an opportunity to test their reflexes at an ecodriving stand and learn how to drive their cars in an environmentally-friendly manner. Biking with a bag The In Tune With Nature Days campaign did not limit itself to KP offices. The “Małe Piwo” website is currently running an environmental contest which affords an opportunity to get involved to employees based outside of the breweries or the Warsaw office (e.g. in distribution centres). The contenders are asked to plan a biking tour complete with its route and aim, suggest eco-picnic activities and list the required accessories. Anyone who submits their favourite biking route will receive a bag made of KP brand campaign banners. Authors of the best two ideas will be awarded bicycles. “Banner bags are a recent fad – not only do they look good – they are also very unique”, says Klaudyna Polanowska-Skrzypek, Public Relations Specialist at Kompania Piwowarska. “This, however, is not why we chose to make them. What counts the most for us is their environmental value. By using our banners to make the bags, we recycle fabric which would otherwise go to waste. Thus, we end up protecting the environment and prolonging the life of our banners. In addition, we help the jobless as we order the bags to be made by the Employment Activation Office. In effect, each bag is hand-made which makes it a true work of art.” While large companies inevitably leave an imprint on the environment, their impact should be minimised to the extent possible. Kompania Piwowarska is in a position to do this on a large scale through its beer production and distribution as well as on a smaller scale through the daily choices and behaviours of its employees. Campaigns such as In Tune With Nature are meant to show everyone that even the smallest gestures may contribute to protecting the environment.
