Focuses will include agriculture as it related to politics, leadership, and student organizations. This course is highly recommended for students interested in becoming an FFA Chapter or State Officer. This course is an independent study. Course Objectives and Competencies: Understand the Global Significance of Agriculture Understand Current Issues in Agriculture Analyze Current Trends Communicate in Written and Verbal Form Understand Professionalism, Ethics, and Business Etiquette Agricultural Law and Policies Goal Setting Advocating as part of your Student Organization Grading: The grading policy will follow the Dexter High School Student Excellence Learning Policy. In addition grades will be given as followed: Daily Grade- 40% (10 points per day) Projects- 40% Classwork- 20% Attendance and Tardiness: Attendance policies will follow regulations determined by the Dexter High School handbook. In addition, in order to receive all points towards the daily grade students must be present AND participate in class discussion. This course should be no less than 60% classroom discussion. If students do not participate they will not be able to receive full points for their daily grade. Students should be prepared and ready when class begins. Students will be dismissed by the teacher, not the bell. Excessive tardiness (more than one a week) will result in a two point deduction of daily grades. Absences and Make up work: Policies for this course will follow regulation determined by the Dexter High School handbook. In order to gain daily points missed from the day of the absence(s), the student must complete any worksheet or assignment given that day. If a worksheet was not given, the student must write a 350word paper on the topic of the teacher’s choice (what was covered in the missed day lecture or a leadership topic). No late work will be accepted. Code of Conduct: Agriculture education prepares students to be young professionals. Therefore, students will abide by the District Code of Conduct in the student handbook and accept the appropriate consequences. In addition: Foul language will NOT be tolerated under any circumstance. For each inappropriate word spoken two points will be taken off of the student’s daily grade. If foul language persists parents may be called. Cell phone/music players will not be allowed during class time. If caught with a device, rules outlined by the Dexter High School handbook will be followed. No food will be permitted in the classroom. Only drinks with twist top lids are allowed. Students will follow the Dexter Agriculture Education Department policies and procedures. Shop Safety: Safety is the most important aspect when in the shop. After passing a safety test with a score of 100% students will be allowed in the shop. If a student is horse playing in the shop, the student will be asked to leave for the remainder of the class period and receive a zero for their daily grade. If unsafe actions continue to happen, the student will be asked to be removed from the class. If students are not wearing the proper safety equipment, students will be asked to put the proper equipment on and receive a zero for their daily grade.
