Yard Signs and Summer Reading – Judith Wines & Mary Beth Mulligan Kids, typically elementary aged, receive lawn signs when they meet a summer reading goal or complete the SRP. Families can be encouraged to take pictures and submit them for a FLICKR page. Reasons why: • Promotes your SRP • Positive peer pressure • Visual demonstration of library support • Potential increase in circulation Implementation • • • • • • • • Acquire Signs Vista print with 40% off coupon: 40 signs for $140. “Adaptive reuse” Check local zoning laws on signage In our municipality, the Library would need a Village Board resolution approving the use of the signs Signs could be placed surreptitiously, so kids are surprised. Or kids could know the target and work towards it. Signs can be returned for reuse, and to encourage compliance with zoning ordinances. Possible Pitfalls Members of the community might construe the signs as supporting a Library vote. If the signs were paid for with public funds, this could be problematic. Being mindful of wording and vote dates would help prevent this problem. Wording Possibilities • • • • A Super Summer Reader lives here An Altamont Library Super Reader lives here Fizz Bang! A great summer reader lives here (not so good for reuse) An Altamont Library Champion lives here.
