Year 5/6 Literacy Autumn 2015 Year 5 Autumn 1 September 2015 This document outlines what the children will be taught in English lessons, covering the teaching of reading, writing and spoken language. It explains the targets that the children are working on and they should continue working on them in all aspects of the curriculum. In addition to this the children are also taught aspects of the curriculum through individual reading, independent reading, listening to books read aloud, and standalone spelling and handwriting lessons. Writing is also taught through topic and science lessons. Contemporary Narrative- Kensuke’s Kingdom- 6 weeks Writing Genres Character Study. Persuasive letter. Writing in character- letters, diaries etc. Narrative- story about going on an adventure. Debate Year 5 targets- reading Continue to read and discuss an increasingly wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks. Increasing their familiarity with a wide range of books , including myths, legends and traditional stories, modern fiction, fiction from our heritage and books from other cultures and traditions. Recommend books that they have read to their peers, giving reasons for their choices. Identifying themes and conventions in and across a wide range of writing. Checking that the book makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and exploring the meaning of words in context. Asking questions to improve their understanding. Drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence. Summarise the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas. Discuss and evaluate how authors use language including figurative language. Mrs J Clark Year 5/6 Literacy Autumn 2015 Year 5 Targets – handwriting Continue to practise handwriting and be encouraged to increase the speed of it. To be clear about the standard of handwriting that is expected for a task. Understand when to use an unjoined style emails, capital letters, completing forms. Year 5 Targets- composition Identifying the audience for and purpose of writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own. Noting and developing initial ideas, drawing on reading and research where necessary. In writing narratives, considering how authors have developed characters and settings in what pupils have read, listened to r seen performed. Select appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning. Précising longer passages. Use a wide range of devices to build cohesion. Year 5 Targets –grammar and punctuation Use expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely. Learn the grammar and punctuation taken from the National Curriculum for Y5/6. Determiner Apostrophes for possession Clauses- subordinative, embedded Conjunctions, adverbs, prepositions. Revision of different word classes. Using commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity. Using relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or with an implied (i.e omitted pronoun) relative pronoun. Year 5 Targets- spoken language Listen and respond appropriately to their peers. Ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge. Use relevant strategies to build their vocabulary. Articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions. Maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative discussions.
