Year 4/5 Literacy Autumn 2015 Year 4 Autumn 1 September 2015 This document outlines what the children will be taught in English lessons, covering the teaching of reading, writing and spoken language. It explains the targets that the children are working on and they should continue working on them in all aspects of the curriculum. In addition to this the children are also taught aspects of the curriculum through individual reading, independent reading, listening to books read aloud, and standalone spelling and handwriting lessons. Writing is also taught through topic and science lessons. Ancient Egypt- 6 weeks Diary entries Persuasive letter Reports Recount Year 4 targets- reading Listening to and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks. Reading books that are structured in different ways and reading for a range of purposes. Using dictionaries to check the meaning of words that they have read. Increases their familiarity with a wide range of books, including fairy stories, myths and legends and retelling some orally. Recognise themes in what they read, such as good over evil or the use of magical devices in fairy stories and folk tales. Ask questions to help improve their understanding of the text. Check that the text makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context. Participate in discussions about books. Continue to listen to whole books being read to them both at home and school. Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes when reading. Year 4 Targets – handwriting Use the diagonal and horizontal strokes that are needed to join letters and understand which letters, when adjacent to one another, are best left unjoined. Increase the legibility, consistency and quality of their handwriting. Mrs J Clark Year 4/5 Literacy Autumn 2015 Year 4 Targets- composition Discuss writing that is similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar. Draft and write around a theme: in non-narrative material, using simple organisational devices. Propose changes to grammar and vocabulary to improve consistency, including the accurate use of pronouns in sentences. Proof read spelling and punctuation errors. Read aloud their own writing to a group or a whole class. Year 4 Targets –grammar and punctuation Extend the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions, including when, if, because, although. Use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause. Use fronted adverbials. Use commas after fronted adverbials. Learn grammar and punctuation from the Year3/4 National Curriculum. Ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge. Use relevant strategies to build their vocabulary. Articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions. Maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative discussions. Give well- structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes, including for expressing feelings.
