Practical Nursing Program 2016-2017 Admission Information Program Description The provincial practical nursing education program is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, judgments and attitudes to perform to the full range of competencies as identified by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia. The program provides a learning experience that is integrated, professional, collaborative and culturally sensitive with an aim to prepare graduates to care for individuals and families at multiple life stages and in a variety of practice settings. Upon successful completion of the program, learners will possess the competencies to successfully complete the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE). Promotion, offered through TRU Open Learning or (2) BIOL 1590 and BIOL 1690, Human Anatomy and Physiology or BIOL 1593 and BIOL 1693, offered through TRU Open Learning** Letter of Introduction*** *LPI scores are valid only if written within the last 2 years **Option 2 is recommended for students who are looking to ladder into BScN Program ***Letter of Introduction must be NO MORE than 2 typed pages, include a brief personal history, the reasons behind choosing nursing, the qualities you bring to the program and your personal career goals. Costs Intake Date The PN program offers one intake every other year, beginning in September. The next intake will occur in Fall 2016. Applications are accepted from October 1st to March 31st. Tuition $7,465 per year Books $500 per year Post Admission Requirements Last day to submit a complete application: MARCH 31, 2016 Length 2 years Admission Requirements BC Grade 12 or equivalent or Mature Student Status BC English 12 or English 12 First Peoples with a minimum of 73% (with the government exam within the last 5 years); or level 5 on the composition section of the Language Proficiency Index (LPI)*, with all other categories of LPI at a minimum of 70%; or LPI level 4 if completed between October 2011 and October 2013, or satisfied a completion of TRU English Assessment (ACCUPLACER) at the university entrance level; or completion of TRU ENGL 0600 with a grade of 65% or better or completion of ESAL 0570 & ESAL 0580 with a grade of 65% or better BC Math 11 Principles with a grade of 60% or better (if taken prior to 2012 and less than 10 years ago) or Math 11 Foundations with a grade 60% or better (commencing 2012) Human Anatomy and Physiology for Practical Nurses with a grade of 65% or better. Students have two options to meet this prerequisite: (1) PNUR 1300, Anatomy and Physiology for Practical Nursing or HLTH 1121 Foundation Human Anatomy-Physiology for Health Personal Safety (face-to-face class offered through TRU Williams Lake Continuing Studies one time only) Criminal Record Check (must be completed by TRU) CPR – C Pro (recertification needed every two years as per School of Nursing policy) Immunization as required by clinical partner sites and recommended by BC Centre for Disease Control (2009) CLPNBC requisite skills and abilities Read and sign the CLPNBC brochure Negative TB test or chest x-ray Assessment To complete an assessment test ($35), applicants will be given a referral form from the Admissions Office to take to the Library Centre. Although the grade level requirement (Grade 10, Grade 12, etc.) will be waived for students classified as mature, individual course prerequisites listed for the program or course must be met. Selective Admission Process The School of Nursing Selection Committee uses a selective admission process to determine admission to Year (1) of the PN program. Only complete applications are reviewed. During this process, applicants are assessed on their academic performance of the admission requirements, along with other academic performance, including high school and postsecondary course grades. Applicants with strong academic performance/grades will be considered for admission. Students are required to pay a $500 commitment fee to secure your seat. It will be held as a deposit toward your fall tuition. TRU Admissions will notify all reviewed applicants whether they have been “Accepted”, “Waitlisted”, or “Not Accepted”. Acceptance is conditional and will not be deemed final until all documentation has been submitted. Final official transcripts must be provided no later than April 30, 2016 Official transcripts must be issued within two years of application and must be received in sealed envelopes from the issuing institution Letter of Introduction – mailed to the Admissions Office MAILED or COURIERED applications submitted on the deadline date must be Post Marked by the post office, date stamp clearly visible on the envelope. Applicants are responsible to ensure all required documents are submitted by specified deadline dates if requested from other post-secondary institutions and/or other agencies.
