Christa Thorndyke is the daughter of
Cindy and SandyThorndyke. She was
nominated as a Top Athlete by Coach
Baker. She plays Volleyball and will be
on the Softball team in the spring.
Christa has worked hard since arriving
on the FHS campus and feels “you’ve
got to hustle every step” to be a good
athlete. She likes high school and feels
this honor is a plus. Christa likes all of
her classes and teachers, but has really
gotten close to Miss Sealey since she got
here. Christa’s personal life saying is,
Don’t let the game beat you, you have to
beat it” and “There’s always someone
watching.”
She also says, “GO
TORNADOES!”
Issue 3
Brianna Lazzaro is the daughter of Gwen
and Perry Locklear. She was nominated
for this honor by Ms. Houser and Ms.
Prevatte.
Being selected as a Top
Tornado has not changed Brianna—she
likes high school in general. She also
likes spaghetti, her favorite song is
“Love the Way You Lie” and her
favorite band is Nickelback. She plays
softball and a little football with her
cousins. Brianna says, “I am a Christian,
like me or don’t. If anyone needs
spiritual help, they can always come to
me no matter who it is, or what’s the
situation.” Not surprisingly, Brianna’s
personal life saying is “Practice what
you preach.”

Art students assisted by other classes on
campus produced approximately 700
pinwheels which they placed in front of the
school in the shape of a Peace Symbol on
September 21st, the International Day of
Peace. Pinwheels for Peace is an art
installation project started in 2005 by two Art
teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan,
who teach at Monarch High School in
Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their
students to express their feelings about
what’s going on in the world and in their
lives. The project was quickly embraced by
their students and the entire school
community and by millions of art teachers,
teachers, parents, children and adults who
desire peace in our world.
The first Pinwheels for Peace were
installed on Sept. 21, 2005. Since then, we
have grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted
the first year, to three million pinwheels in
2009!

North
Carolina)
Young Artist
of the Year in
the High School Division. His work was
recognized at an awards ceremony in

only student from outside the Raleigh
area to achieve that distinction.
There is a correction to the
information in last week’s paper. Art
Club dues are $10.00. Students wishing
to join the Art Honor Society will pay an
extra $9.00 as seniors or $3.00 as
underclassmen. See Mrs. Berdeau for

Last Friday, the Varsity Football
Team took on Trask. Cain Wilkerson
commented, “Defense played well. We
have a few kinks on offense that we need
to work out, but we will be okay.” The
Golden Tornadoes played a very hard
game, but came up short at the end with
a score of 6-13. Coach Woods said,
“Defense played good, but offense didn’t
produce as well as they needed. We had
too many penalties and bad snaps, as
well as the last game, but we just could
not overcome them. To make our team
and games better we just have to work
harder and score more points.”
The team plans to play harder tonight
by working as a team. “We didn’t do as
well as we thought we would have.
Everybody tries to do their own thing on
the field instead of working together as a
team. If everyone does their role to the
best of their ability and cut down on
turnovers and penalties, maybe we
would win as a team,” said Juwan
Addison and Jahvar Billings. The team’s
motto for this year is, “Play hard and
play together.”

The JV lost to Trask 35 to 16. In 1 st
quarter, they were down 12 to 0 with a
minute left, but the score was 8 to 12 at
half. In the 1st play of the third quarter
the JV scored making it 16 to 12. They
played a very good game overall and
had good team workl. They should have
won; however, some penalties and
turnovers did them in.

The Girl’s Volleyball has two games
coming up. They will be going up
against Red Springs and East Columbus.
Coach Baker said that his girls will have
to be ready for sure to go up against East
Columbus. They are powerful, but not
powerful enough to hold down these
Tornadoes. Coach Baker also said that
they should do well against Red Springs
if they don’t have a let down. the girls
won their game that they had last week
against West Columbus with a score of
3-0. Right now their record is 7-3 and 20 in conference.
