September 24, 2010 Art students assisted by other classes on campus produced approximately 700 pinwheels which they placed in front of the school in the shape of a Peace Symbol on September 21st, the International Day of Peace. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two Art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who teach at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. The project was quickly embraced by their students and the entire school community and by millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in our world. The first Pinwheels for Peace were installed on Sept. 21, 2005. Since then, we have grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to three million pinwheels in 2009! We have a few kinks on offense that we need to work out, but we will be okay.” The Golden Tornadoes played a very hard game, but came up short at the end with a score of 6-13. Coach Woods said, “Defense played good, but offense didn’t produce as well as they needed. We had too many penalties and bad snaps, as well as the last game, but we just could not overcome them. To make our team and games better we just have to work harder and score more points.” The team plans to play harder tonight by working as a team. “We didn’t do as well as we thought we would have. Everybody tries to do their own thing on the field instead of working together as a team. If everyone does their role to the best of their ability and cut down on turnovers and penalties, maybe we would win as a team,” said Juwan Addison and Jahvar Billings. The team’s motto for this year is, “Play hard and play together.” By Mi’Chaela A.
