PHOTOGRAPHY SYLLABUS 2013-2014 Teacher: Pat Culbertson Room 102 E-mail: pat.culbertson@cherokee.k12.ga.us Website: http://mysite.cherokee.k12.ga.us/personal/pat_culbertson/site/default.aspx Make –up times: (3:30-4:30 Monday, Tuesday) (3:30-4:15 Wednesday, Thursday) Course Prerequisites: Visual Arts 1 & 2 Lab Fee: $10.00 – (due first two weeks) All students are asked to contribute $10.00 towards classroom supplies. The county permits lab fees for courses which require specialized supplies for the class. This fee is not mandatory yet it does enable the art program a wider variety of quality art materials. Checks should be made out to Cherokee High School. BYLD classroom: The art classroom can be used as a BYLD room, ONLY IF IT PERTAINS TO ART AND IF TEACHER DIRECTED. Texting is not allowed during instruction time. Course Description This course is designed for the student who is interested in art as it relates to digital photography. The student will use a SLR digital camera and computer software (Photoshop) to study both the technical aspects and the formal components of design and visual communication. As students develop basic skills of working the camera, they will begin a creative manipulation aspect to photography, including journaling, animation, and sculpture as photography. Materials Needed memory card 3 ring notebook for keeping notes and handouts (first week) Flash drive (not due until shoots begin) 35 MM camera - optional (be familiar with the operation of your camera) will be locked in my office GENERAL INFORMATION Class time is for Photography assignments only. Almost all of the work for your grade is done in class. Absences will hurt your grade unless you are able to make up the time. (see above) Discussion, Critique, and assessment are crucial to learning about art and photography. Not all work in class is “studio” Students will work on a rotation basis in groups. Opportunities will be given for extra credit throughout the semester. Take advantage… You will be required to participate in various photography shows GRADING Due to the nature of this class and the rotation process involved, many of the grades will be given near the end of the semester. It is important to keep up with work and rotations. It will be necessary to make up work when absent. There is limited time in group rotations and students can easily get behind. Students will be graded on the thought process and the degree to which you show progressive steps while working on the computer. Daily Work – 30% Final Projects/Shoots/Computer – 50% Critique Participation – 20% COMPLETION of individual projects depends on: Quality of photo/ understanding of settings Originality/thought process in taking photo/ set up Specific Objectives Improvement/Growth OTHER FACTORS that will affect your final grade are: Attendance Studio Maintenance- proper use of time and materials/computer Ability to discuss visual concepts ,participation in critiques, active involvement Effort/ ATTITUDE MAKE-UP If you miss a day you must find your own time to make up project work. Projects will be introduced and assigned of specific days and with specific due dates. Class and group assessments will take place on specific due dates. If a student does not have work completed on the due date, the student will have 10 days (not in class) to finish the project as stated in the Cherokee County Schools Handbook.
