What is a Mommy Makeover?

A “mommy make-over” is a phrase used when combining procedures which address the changes in a woman’s breasts and abdomen following pregnancy.

What procedures are combined to make up a Mommy Makeover?

An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck is designed to firm and smooth the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat. This surgical procedure may also tighten the fascia or internal girdle of the abdominal wall. In some patients, typically following a first single pregnancy when the muscle is still intact and the skin elasticity has bounced back leaving only a small pocket of fat, abdominal liposuction may be an option. The result is a flatter, tighter abdominal profile.

A Mastopexy (Breast Lift), Breast Augmentation, or Breast Reduction will be used to help with breast concerns. For patients who have lost breast tissue (through breast-feeding or weight loss) and who have nipple displacement, a breast lift (Mastopexy) may be in order. Some patients still have good nipple placement but have additional skin. Women sometimes will miss the fullness of their pregnancy breasts, in these cases, a Breast Augmentation may be warranted. In others, the breasts may remain larger following their pregnancy. A reduction will help achieve a smaller breast size. It is also an options to have a mastopexy (Breast Lift) and a Breast Augmentation to achieve fullness and proper nipple placement. Based on your individual concerns, Dr. Sullivan will recommend the options best options for you.

Am I a candidate for an Mommy Makeover?

If a healthy diet and regular abdominal exercise workouts are doing little to eliminate accumulations of excess fat and during your consultation, your surgeon will perform an exam and evaluate your skin, the location of any scars, the amount and location of fat, and the status of underlying fascia to determine if you are an ideal candidate for this procedure.

How will I look and feel following surgery?

There is typically a two week recovery form any procedures done in combination with an

Abdominoplasty. With liposuction and breast surgery, there is typically a 7-10 day recovery period.

What should I know about my final results?

Soon after surgery you will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body. Although your scars may begin to fade after a few months, it is important to realize that you will always have a scar. Unless your gain or lose a significant amount of weight, you can expect to retain your new shape for many years. Over time, gravity may cause your skin to loosen. If this occurs, your plastic surgeon may suggest additional treatment.

How should I choose my surgeon?

No matter what type of cosmetic surgery you're considering, one of the most important factors in success is the surgeon you choose. Many surgeons today are performing cosmetic surgery without the benefits of any formal training. Ask your surgeon if she is certified by The American Board of

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASPRS). Ask about her specialty within the realm of plastic surgery. Does she perform all types of surgeries from head-to-toe or is she specialized in specific areas? By asking the questions and feeling comfortable with your surgeon, you will be on your way to a successful outcome.
