Dear Prueter Families,
Wow! It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving has been here and gone, and Halloween is fast approaching.
Recently, staff have had extensive dialogue around Halloween Hoot celebrations that often take place here at Prueter.
There has been a great deal of planning and excitement over a new look for this finale to fall celebrations!
This year our October 31st festivities will kick off with a large costume parade of book characters. We are
inviting parents and community members to come and enjoy our whole school parade of great literary figures. The
parade will begin about 9:25 after attendance has been taken. The parade route (weather depending) will have
students leaving the school via the current primary entrance, walking over to the kindergarten entrance and up the path
to Prueter Ave, along the front of the school sidewalk and back into the front doors of the school.
This means that students need to come to school dressed in their Book Character costume and bring their book.
We always like to link our celebrations with learning and so this year we are encouraging costumes that reflect what we
are reading. The parade is about the costume but it’s also about the book too; so please help your child find that piece
of literature that features their character.
Students could choose to be a character from a novel or picture book (ie., Franklin, Flat Stanley, Geronimo
Stilton or even Batman and Superman or Disney characters). The sky is the limit for which costume/character to choose!
Pirates, hockey players, farmers, dinosaurs, truck drivers, princesses – all are found in books somewhere. Students may
choose Hollywood heros or cartoon characters – magazines are books too! If you have already purchased a Halloween
costume, this would work; then your child just needs to find a book or magazine that is all about that costume. Please
note that students will not be allowed to carry any weapons as accessories to their costumes and we strongly discourage
violent/horror-type characters.
If you are having trouble finding a book, students can talk with their teacher and we’ll get help from our
librarian, or students could write their own story about their book character and costume. This is meant to be a fun way
of celebrating dressing up and anchoring our experiences in literacy. The book is just as important as the costume. Be
creative!
After the Book Character parade, staff have planned various activities that will occur in their own classrooms for
the remainder of the day. Please watch for more information coming home from teachers with further details around
all the fun learning experiences coming that day!
We are really excited to see our community come together to celebrate Book Character Day. Enjoy choosing
character costumes! Remember, characters in non-fiction books and magazines count too!
Sincerely,
Prueter Staff
And so much more!
