The Master of Science (Plan II) requires a minimum of 36 units, of which 18 must be in graduate coursework. Program
requirements are substantially different from those of Plan I (thesis). The guidance committee is responsible for specifying a program
meeting these requirements. Both the GGE and Graduate Studies check to be sure these unit totals are met when the student is
advanced to candidacy. All coursework must be taken for a letter grade, if available.
The list of entrance deficiencies is determined at the time of admission to the program. We encourage students to fulfill as many as
possible and as quickly as possible. Entrance deficiencies CANNOT be waived or substituted.

The guidance committee should develop a 15-23 units of coursework in the selected areas of emphasis and research methodology
section. We have set a level of two required courses for each area, including relevant prior coursework. The committee should bear
the unit requirements in mind. Normally, the elected area is covered in the comprehensive examination. Students are urged to read
"Guidelines for Preparation and taking Qualifying and Masters Plan II Examinations in the Graduate Group in Ecology", a 1990
publication.
