A Knights Tale Essay In the visual text “A Knights Tale” directed by Brian Helgeland, It follows William Thatcher and his 3 squires into a new land to seek fame and fortune. Count Adamar is an important because the director made the Shot Types, Dialogue and Music part of his character. One of the techniques that make’s Count Adamar an important character is the Shot Types. The Shot Types make Adamar an important character because they show his emotions like anger or jealousy. In The scene when Jocelyn and William are dancing the camera purposely zooms up on his face to see his emotion which were jealously and anger this shows that the director purposely made the camera zoom up to prove that Adamar has feeling for Jocelyn and also that he envies William. Another technique that makes him important is Dialogue. The Dialogue used in the scene when William and Jocelyn walk onto the dance floor and Count Adamar says “ Sir Ulrich why don’t you show us a dance from your country” This shows that Count Adamar is courious in Ulrich Von Liechtenstein’s real identity and wants to humiliate Ulrich and hopefully reveal his true identity. This is why Shot Types and Dialogue makes Count Adamar an important character in the film. Another technique that makes Count Adamar an important character is Music. Music pulls the film together and creates tension and suspense between Adamar and William like in the scene when Adamar enters the prison and beats up William because he is in the stocks and cannot defend himself. The Music ties in with this scene because when William is being beaten up by Adamar the music changes from sad music into fast and loud music. This creates tension and suspense for what will happen next. The next technique is Camera angle. Camera angle is important because in the scene when Count Adamar gets news from his spies that Ulrich Von Liechtenstein’s is not who he seems and that he is an imposter. The camera angle changes when it zooms up on his face from a slight low angle this is called a low angle shot. The camera man does this to try to tell the audience that Adamar is angry and that William is small and insignificant to the story and that Adamar hates William and wants to expose him to the world. This is why Music and Camera Angles makes Count Adamar an important character. Adamar is also an important because of the costumes. The costumes show that he is important because in the scene when Adamar sits next to Jocelyn at the ball he is dressed in fancy and expensive clothes. This shows that he is rich and can afford to pay for his clothes also that he wants to win Jocelyn’s heart by looking fancy and by telling her that he can afford her needs. Another technique is dialogue. Music in the scene when Adamar walks into the dudgeon and the music started to go slow and dark this shows that Adamar is angry and wants to kill or injure William while he is in the stocks. So this is why Costumes and Music plays a big part in why Adamar is an important character. In conclusion music, dialogue, camera angles & shot types makes Adamar an important and special character. I think Adamar is a great character because he is the villain of the story and a good filom needs a bad guy. Also the director played a huge role in making Adamar great by using the shot angles and the other techniques used to show anger, anticipation and emotion. That is why Adamar is an important charcter.
