Technology Description Tool – MIETE2011/2012
Worksheet Use
Worksheets are used throughout the week long course as an integral part of
the Algorithm. However, it is important that these Worksheets be used
correctly, or they will not only have negligible value, but consume your
valuable time.
The Worksheets
 Should not be filled out as a rote exercise
 Should be viewed as a guide to structure your discussions and data
gathering, a focus for your thinking, and as a check on your logic
processes
 Should not be limiting
 Should record some important contact information, and capture the
essence of your thinking
 Should be used as a support tools for the work you do within the
Algorithm
 Should not be used if they are unhelpful

(Remember to consider the idea of a technology-product spectrum – meaning that
products or services are actually brought to the marketplace – pure technologies usually
are NOT.)

Technology Description:
This tool introduces Technology Capabilities and describes how to capture them.
“Technology Capabilities are conceptual-level elements that capture WHAT technology can do. These often have
quite abstract names but it is important that they do not imply any particular class of technology or products.
Example:
Technology Component: Relational Database Management System - that provides services that give us the
capability to manage structured data
Technology Capability: 'Structured Data Management Services' “

Check list:

List technology components

Identify capabilities (Give the capability a name and description )

Add or define any sub-capabilities that are contained in this one.

Capture any relevant technology objectives

Capture any relevant technology principles

Capture the uniqueness of the technology

Identify IP

Identify potential applications

Technology Description Tool – MIETE2011/2012
1. Name the technology: ______________________________________________
2. Identify the main capabilities :
3. In non-technical terms, describe the potential applications this technology
presents. List potential products based upon the technology.
4. Explain how this technology or product is unique from other technologies or
products. What advantage does it represent for a product, or for manufacturing a
new product (what are its unique capabilities?)
5. Does the technology represent a platform for the creation of multiple new
products?
6. Describe what must be done to this technology before it can be commercialized in
the form of products/services (i.e. what is the stage of technical development)
7. Describe the legal and practical protection status of the technology or product, or
the potential for protection; i.e., patent applied for (where), patent granted (how
old, where), trade marked, copyrights, trade secret?
