Romeo and Juliet
Final Research Project
Choose one project from the list below. Some options are group projects, others are individual.
Pay careful attention to the due date for the project.
Choice 1- Costume book: The setting of the play is fourteenth-century Italy, but actors in
Shakespeare’s time would have worn Elizabethan costumes. Make a costume book. Draw a
minimum of one authentic (based on research) costume for Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Prince
Escalus, Nurse, Friar Laurence, Lord Capulet, Lord Montague, Lady Capulet, and Lady
Montague. Label each costume according to the character, act, and scene. Include a oneparagraph explanation of each costume’s authenticity. Include a Works Cited of the sources
used. (individual)
Choice 2 – Architectural blueprint: Draw a detailed blueprint for the Globe Theatre or create
one using a software such as AutoCad. Base the blueprint on research. Label the various parts of
the theater. Type a two to four-page paper that gives the history and explains the theatre. Include
a Works Cited of the sources used. (individual)
Choice 3- Create and sew costumes: Design and sew a minimum of two costumes for
characters in the play. Dress dolls in the costumes and label each costume according to character,
act, and scene. Base the costume designs on research. Attach a one-page paper to the project that
includes an explanation of each costume. Include a Works Cited of the sources used. (Individual)
Choice 4- Design scenes: Design five of the most important scenes (in your opinion). Display
the scenes on a poster, on several posters, or in shadow boxes (dioramas). Be creative in your
presentation. Clearly label each scene according to act and scene. Include a summary of what is
happening in each scene. Each summary must be a minimum of one-half page in length and must
include some factual, researched information about the set design or costumes. Include a Works
Cited of the sources used. (Individual)
Choice 5 - Puppet show: Select a scene with a minimum of four characters. Make puppets to
represent all the characters in the scene. Puppets may be made out of brown paper bags,
construction paper, cloth, felt-tip markers, and other household items. On a poster, draw the
background that would be used for the puppet show, or consider building a puppet show window
to use in your presentation. Rewrite the scene in modern English and present your show to the
class. If you prefer, you can video tape your show and present it. (Practice first!) Explain to the
class the costume and set design (based on research). Include a Works Cited of the sources used.
(1-2 people)
Choice 6- Monologue: Individual performance. Memorize and perform two to three
monologues/soliloquies (or 1 long one – see me with questions).Dress the part when you
perform. Type a one to two-page paper explaining why these lines are important and explicate
the lines (tell what the lines mean). Include a Works Cited of the sources used. (Individual)
Choice 7 - Group performance: Up to 3 members may get together, choose a scene and
perform it. You may either video tape the performance and show it in class or perform it live.
Make sure you use costumes and props. Each member should type a 1-2 page paper describing
the blocking and stage direction used (research based). Include a Works Cited of the sources
used. (2-3 people)
Choice 8 – Children’s book: Design a comic book or an illustrated children’s book that tells the
story of Romeo and Juliet. You may use the words of Shakespeare, or you may write and
illustrate a more modern version of the story. On the first page, rewrite the prologue in your own
words while maintaining the integrity of the sonnet. Refer to sources for ideas and include a
Works Cited of the sources used. Minimum number of pages for book — 15. (Individual)
Choice 9 – Write and perform a song/rap: Write a song about the story of Romeo and Juliet.
Display the words of the song on a poster or in a PowerPoint or Photo Story. Sing the song to the
class with musical accompaniment or make a recording of yourself and/or your band performing
the song. Write a short paper about how music is poetry and include a Works Cited of the
sources used. (1-2 people)
Choice 10 – Create a Photostory or Powerpoint or Podcast: Design a presentation that tells
the story of Romeo and Juliet. Either summarize the story or retell an important scene. Be
creative! Include music, voice over, images, and whatever else makes it fun and interesting.
Research online tutorials or information about the software you decide to use and write a short
paper explaining what your learned. Include a Works Cited of the sources used. (Individual)
Choice 11 – Do whatever you want!: Develop a project idea of your own. Think computer,
website, video, sound recording, etc. Clear the project with me BEFORE you begin working,
and then complete the project.
