BAPTISM:
By Appointment. Reserve at least one month in advance.
Preparation classes are necessary.
Make arrangements at least nine months in advance.
Preparation sessions are necessary.
Arrangements are made in conjunction with the funeral home.
Eulogies must be given at the funeral home at the time of the wake service
or at the luncheon. No eulogies at the funeral liturgy, please.
Every family must be properly registered. New parishioners should
register as soon as possible.
Every parishioner must be registered. This is a condition for admission
to our Program and reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation,
First Penance, First Eucharist, and Matrimony; also, for testimonial letters or
sponsorship of Baptism and Confirmation outside the Parish.
We are concerned and want to be advised when someone is ill at
home or in the hospital. Call the rectory to have the shut-in placed on
our monthly Holy Communion calls or seriously ill prayer list.

A GENERAL COMMENDATION ~ Our funeral liturgies are well done. I commend the “Funeral Choir” who comes to sing
and play for a parishioner called to God’s heavenly kingdom. I also remind those who can participate to come to the Vigil
Service when announced to add to the “Song of Farewell” we do at the Funeral Home. Also, I ask all parishioners who are
able, to notice local obituaries and to participate in the Funeral Mass as a member of our parish family to give prayers and
support to those in our parish who have lost a loved one. This is indeed a Ministry of Compassion which is an important
source of comfort for mourners.
I have also been asked about the disposal of Religious Articles.
What you can do:
1) Give them away to someone who would appreciate it.
2) Bury them or incinerate them.
3) Physically destroy them so they no longer imitate or represent the article or image.
The Blessing exists only as long as the article is “whole”.

remember all sick and shut-ins at every Mass, we would like our parish family to be aware of the need for special prayer intentions

LIGHTING THE SANTUARY CANDLE ~ Lighting the red vigil lights in church for your own special intention has always
been a long standing tradition within the Catholic Church. Many parishes also offer the SANCTUARY CANDLE to light for
your special intention, living, deceased or special occasion. With a $5.00 donation you may request our sanctuary candle
to burn for one week. Simply enclose in an envelope your “In Memory Of” intention. That intention will be announced in
the weekly bulletin.

CHOIR PRACTICES ~ Practice for the Sunday Choir is on Mondays at 7:00 PM.
Practice for the Saturday Choir is on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
CENTENNIAL CHOIR ~ There will also be a Centennial Choir practice this
Sunday, July 28th immediately following the 10:30 AM Mass.
BINGO ~ The next Bingo is on August 13th. Doors open at 5:00 PM and Bingo starts at 6:30 PM. Thank you to all the
people who attended and helped with the July Bingo. We are also asking for donations of “goodies”, pies, cakes, etc.
ANNIVERSARY MASSES ~ Bishop Mark Bartchak and the Family Life Office cordially invite all
couples celebrating their 1st, 25th, 40th, 50th, 55th, and 60+ Wedding Anniversary in 2013 (and
their families) to attend the Annual Wedding Anniversary Liturgy. Couples may attend Sunday,
Sept. 8 in ALTOONA at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament or Sunday, Sept. 15 in
JOHNSTOWN at St. John Gualbert Cathedral. Both locations are handicap accessible. Liturgies
in each location begin at 2:00 p.m. Bishop Mark will be the celebrant and homilist at each
celebration. Punch and cookies will be available after the Mass for anniversary couples and their
families. Reservations must be made through your parish for either celebration by Monday,
August 19. We now have two couples celebrating their 40th wedding anniversaries.

PARISH PICNIC - Everyone is welcome to attend our parish picnic on Sunday, August 11 th at 11:30
a.m. here at the St. Michael church grounds! Once again, the church will be supplying chicken, hot
sausage, hot dogs, kielbasa, sauerkraut, and beverages. We are asking each family to bring a
covered dish. Sign-up sheets are at the church entrances. Please bring a lawn chair to sit under
the shade trees and enjoy the day if you wish to set outside the pavilion.

FIREMEN’S CONVENTION ~ Adams Township Volunteer Fire Co., No. 2 is the host for the 92 nd Annual Convention
of the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of Cambria County and Vicinity which will run from
July 27th until August 3rd, 2013.The members of the Saint Michael Volunteer Fire
Company cordially invite everyone to come and enjoy the Firemen’s Convention. Please
refer to the flyer that was sent to each home for a complete schedule of events. The
firemen greatly appreciate everyone’s continued support. If you would like to volunteer,
please call (814) 495-4111 to sign up. The Fire Company and the Ladies Auxiliary will be
using both our church and our hall on Friday, August 2 nd.
The Best Way to Pray
A priest, a minister and a guru sat discussing the best positions for prayer, while a telephone repairman worked nearby.
“Kneeling is definitely the best way to pray,” the priest said.
“No,” said the minister. “I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven.”
“You’re both wrong,” the guru said. “The most effective prayer position is lying down on the floor.”
The repairman could contain himself no longer. “Hey, fellas,” he interrupted. “The best prayin’ I ever did was when I was
hangin’ upside down from a telephone pole.”
Pilgrimage to Rome
A gathering to pray the Angelus with Pope Francis was the highlight of a Diocesan
pilgrimage to Rome. One hundred twenty four pilgrims participated in the eightday trip July 8-16. On July 14, the pilgrims from Altoona-Johnstown traveled to the
papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, just outside of Rome. A crowd of
about 20,000 people was on hand to see the Holy Father. An Italian TV station
that serves the bishops of Italy invited Bishop Mark L. Bartchak to be interviewed.
After the interview, papal officials gave the Bishop a front row seat for the mid-day
prayer. After Pope Francis prayed the Angelus, blessed the crowd, and offered a
few remarks, he greeted those assembled in the front row, including Bishop
Mark. The Holy Father asked the Bishop his name, where he lived, and why he
was there. When Bishop Mark responded that he was leading a
Diocesan pilgrimage, the Pope responded, "Bravo!" It was the first time Bishop
Mark met Pope Francis. He previously had met Pope John Paul II and Pope
Benedict.

us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time
of trial.” And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three
loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’ And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me;
the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he
will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever
he needs. “So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For
everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone
among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If
you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
those who ask him!”
Religious Education And Christian Helping
Our new 2013-2014 REACH year officially started on June 1, 2013. Students can earn service time for the new
year when participating in any *REACH service projects scheduled: (Bingo; Vacation Bible School; Hoagie/Gob Sale;
Parish Picnic; Forest Hills Labor Day Festival);
and also any service performed outside anywhere in our communities.
*Only REACH Service will cumulate towards the REACH Service Award eligibility opportunity.
All service done will count towards "total service" for the Diocesan Confirmation requirements in grades 9, 10 and 11. (25
Hours ~10 by group and 15 individual). Outside Service Documentation is required for record purposes and forms are
available in the RE Office upon request.
Summer REACH Service Projects Available
NCYC Hoagie / Gob Fundraiser ~ Saturday, August 3rd from 8 to 11 a.m.
Any REACH student can help with Hoagie Prep and earn "Service Hour Credit" for
the new 2013--2014 Religious Education year. Contact the RE Office at 495-4873 if able to help.
Bingo August 13 ~ Prepare food and help with Admission packets / Timeframe: 3-7 PM
Forest Hills Labor Day Festival ~ The annual Forest Hills Labor Day
Festival will be held August 31st, September 1st and 2nd. Once again, our REACH
Youth Ministry will have 2 booths and be selling Apple Dumplings and Ice Cream
Sundaes. REACH Student and Parent volunteers will be needed to help with both
booths for the 3-day weekend. Sign-ups will be available next weekend.

Today is the last day to place an order
for our Hoagie & Gob Fundraiser. The
Gobs will come from Livingston Bakery
and our premium 9” Hoagies will be
made fresh by our REACH students the morning of August 3rd. Order deadline is today, July 28th.
Orders can still be placed by calling the RE Office at 495-4873. If paying by check, make payable to "St.
Michael REACH". Hoagie and Gob Orders will be ready for pick-up at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3rd
or after any of the weekend's masses, August 3rd and 4th.
St. Michael Religious Education Program Registration ~ New 2013-2014 Registration forms for our Religious
Education Program here at St. Michael Parish will be available in the back of the church starting next weekend.
Envelopes will be labeled with family names. Extra packets will also be available for newly registering members. Families
must re-register students every year so that all information is updated. Any questions can be directed to the RE Office at
495-4873. Registrations will be accepted throughout the month of August.
Mary was surprised to receive $10 from her uncle for her birthday. The uncle asked how she was going to spend it. Mary
said, “I’m taking it to Sunday School to put in the offering. God’s gonna be just as surprised as I was at not getting a
dollar like usual!”

UPCOMING EVENTS
OUTDOOR MASS All are most welcome to join us each Sunday evening at 7:00 PM for the Outdoor Sunday Mass at the beautiful
Shrine of Our Lady of the Alleghenies in Loretto. The Masses will continue through Labor Day Weekend, September 1st. Please bring
a lawn chair. In the event of inclement weather, the Mass will be held in the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel.
Outdoor Mass honoring Married Couples with Bishop Mark ALL parishioners are invited to pray with and for those living the
Sacrament of Marriage on Sunday evening, July 28 at 7 pm at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Alleghenies in Loretto. Bring a lawn chair.
Indoors if rain. Bishop Mark is the celebrant and homilist. Come early and picnic together or tour the historic Prince Gallitzin Chapel
House (open 1:00 – 6:00 pm). Singers needed for the choir. One rehearsal at 5:30 before the Mass. Contact choir director Kevin Luke

FESTIVAL St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Windber, PA is holding its annual festival on Saturday and Sunday, August 10th and 11th
on the parish grounds. Live Polka Bands for your dancing and listening pleasure will be the featured attraction both days; ethnic foods,
bingo, games, and theme baskets will be available. On Friday, there will be a Fish Fry (take outs only) from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
