For a full overview of courses (including Nottinghamshire courses) please visit www.netstraining.com Spotlight on Teaching – Improving Teaching and Learning in your schools BOOK NOW Classroom Teachers SLEs and expert leaders Our programmes are designed by: The programme has been designed by a group of expert leaders and teachers from across Affinity and Candleby Lane Teaching School Alliances. We have designed the programmes based upon the latest practice, research and thinking from the sector using the best parts from programmes we have delivered in the past such as ITP/OTP . Our programmes are intended to support: Our programmes are for teachers who require development in key areas of their teaching and learning. This could be new teachers or experienced teachers who require more consistency and need to focus on one or more areas of their practice to become consistently Good or Outstanding. Our programmes have been designed by request from local headteachers as they strongly link to teacher performance management and the support the needs schools to constantly improve the quality of teaching and learning in specific areas. What will each programme include? Led by Outstanding schools and leading teachers and leaders we will invite delegates to engage in research and practice informed face to face training and dialogue with other delegates as well as a strong focus on classroom activity and the programme includes focussed lesson observations in our schools. How do the programmes work? Each programme has the following consistent delivery method. - Pre programme self-audit of the topic area their programme is focussed on 1 full day face to face training – based in Kibworth CE Primary School or Barwell CE Junior School. Approximate - ½ day peer to peer gap task where delegates will go and visit (and be visited) to be observed teaching (non-judgemental) and engage in peer review, as well as then returning the visit.* Kibworth CE Primary School & Barwell CE Junior School £190 for Affinity TSA members £230 for non Members - ½ day return face to face training to review learning, findings and solidify improvements. *We will match up pairings geographically to avoid long travelling distances for delegates We have programmes on offer in the following areas: Questioning - Children ask questions. Teachers ask questions. They are the currency of learning. We use them to elicit information, assess understanding, challenging thinking and engender learning. But are we asking the right questions? Most research indicates that as much as 80% of classroom questioning is based on low order, factual recall questions. Questioning is the essence of our pedagogy and planning – we need to create a climate of enquiry and engagement in high quality, high order questioning if rich, sustained learning is to take place. We need to carefully formulate questions with precision, as well as skilfully targeting the right questions to the right learners. Dates – 7th January & 4th February @ Barwell CE Junior School Challenge - One aspect of great teaching is the ability to weave challenge for all learners seamlessly into every lesson. By providing challenging opportunities for children to learn, teachers enable children to develop resilience, to be inquisitive and independent learners, to experience cognitive conflict and the buzz of real learning. Understanding how to develop a culture which embraces the benefit of challenge for all learners and building a repertoire of strategies to develop this aspect of pedagogy, teachers can ensure that learning is deep, fun and memorable. Dates – 19th January & 9th February @ Kibworth Grammar School Hall Assessment for learning - Being able to use information about children’s learning to adapt practice in order to develop their learning and deepen understanding is fundamental to effective teaching. Understanding how assessment of learning becomes assessment for learning is essential in today’s classrooms. By using assessment information efficiently to shape and refine what is happening in the classroom, teachers can empower learners and accelerate progress. Dates – 26th January & 23rd February @ Kibworth Grammar School Hall Lesson Design - The anatomy of a successful lesson is a judicious mix of good pedagogy, careful preparation, effective subject knowledge, enthusiasm and engagement. The best lessons are defined by good relationships, great outcomes and consistent reflection day in and day out. By being able to identify the key elements of good lesson design, teachers can play to their strengths and identify the areas for development enabling them to make each lesson a little better than the one before – the marginal gains approach encapsulated by British cycling’s David Brailsford. Having clarity about the critical features of the most effective lessons and understanding how best to deliver them will enable teachers to refine and improve their teaching on a daily basis. Dates – 11th February & 10th March @ Barwell CE Junior School Creating a climate for learning - When you walk into some classrooms there is a tangible energy, a visible commitment to learning and the sense of it being a safe place to take risks. All children are engaged in learning, the culture is one of inclusion, aspiration and mutual respect. When children feel safe, recognise that they belong and are thoroughly engaged, they are more likely to take risks with their learning and to enjoy challenges. Learning should be fun! Dates – 28th April & 5th May @ Barwell CE Junior School. Inspiring Boys to Read – Enhancing reading skills for the twenty first century Class teachers and Subject leaders of English Petula Bhojwani 13th January 2016 And 18th April 2015 9.30am3.30pm The course will explore the challenges of reading today with attention to a range of paper and screen texts. Motivating and engaging boys will be core as we strive for children reading for a purpose and pleasure. Participants will be introduced to effective ways to enhance reading around high quality texts and receive a copy of a multilayered text to explore multimodality in their own settings. Outcomes • Quality CPD in the approaches that are research proven to raise boys’ engagement and attainment in reading • Understand and plan for boys’ reading including paper and screen texts • Create a multimodal classroom environment • Select boy-friendly materials to promote reading for purpose and pleasure In order to empower students to lead and question their own progress, we must first empower our staff to be confident to deliver this student led pedagogy. This course aims to develop an awareness of the learning journey within a lesson and how to plan and deliver this effectively to students. Too often teachers can hold the journey of the lesson in their heads. If students are to make accelerated progress they must first be aware and have ownership of the final destination and the signposts need to mark and assess along the way. We will focus upon a Learning approach to our teaching and unpick how active listening and involvement is the route to outstanding teaching and learning. This course offers practical guidance, discussion and resources on how to use coaching and questioning processes within the classroom. School Alliance Members £175 Leicester venue to be confirmed.
