Important Information for
Market Day
Wednesday, May 27, 2015
Hello Parents and Entrepreneurs,
Market Day is fast approaching! It is always one of the highlights of the Grade 4
calendar! Last year we began to make some changes that are more in line with our
curriculum and independent learning strategies. In keeping with this strategy, this year
there will be further refinements to allow students to take as much responsibility for
their learning for this unit. Thus, it’s very important that parents understand their role
and the role that their child needs to take in completing this performance task that
forms part of their assessment. We believe that this will enable all students to have
equal opportunity to perform at their best and maximize their learning.
In addition a further modification for this year will be the individual profits that
students will be able to keep. While we are encouraging all students to be as profitable
as possible, in line with our inquiry units and service at an International School, we are
going to donate 80% of the total Grade 4 net profits to an agreed service project. The
remaining 20% of the net profits may be kept by the student and used as determined by
each student and their family.
The overall outcome for this Economy unit is for students to design a business
plan that includes marketing their product/service, creating their own product/service
with minimal adult assistance, and making a space on Market Day to sell that
product/service. Success in this unit will be evaluated by the amount of independent
learning that students can demonstrate in completing this performance task.
Additional details regarding this Economy unit and Market Day will be
forthcoming after the spring holiday.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation,
The Grade 4 Team
Student Role
-brainstorm a variety of products/services
and determine advantages/disadvantages
for selling and marketability
-create and conduct a survey at school to
find any “glitches” with their
product/service
-following “in class modeling”, they will
devise their business plan
-teachers will be looking for ideas that
students can independently and
successfully produce for Market Day
-where food is involved, maintain strict
health regulations
-brainstorm ways to reduce
“Environmental footprint” with the
packaging of your good
-brainstorm an engaging display for your
booth
-plan the storage and transportation for
your product
-plan the cleaning up/set up for Market
Day
-accurately maintain records of any
support that they have acquired and any
hours involved (Be a good employer!)
Parent/Adult Role
-ask probing questions to help students to
clarify their thinking and enable them to
be able to carry out the task independently
-point out advertisements
-check in with the child regarding their
plan and assist them in becoming more
independent (i.e. Help them choose a
recipe that requires minimal adult
assistance and that puts adults in a
supervisory role instead of an active role.)
-remember that ANY help that a
parent/adult gives (i.e. running an errand
to purchase something) counts towards
the final cost of the good/service
-where food is involved, assisting the child
in helping to keep a clean, hygienic work
environment
-help your child to brainstorm ways to
reduce his/her “Environmental footprint”
with their packaging
-help your child to brainstorm an engaging
display for his/her booth
-transportation/storage prior to Market
Day
-ensure your child sets + cleans up his/her
booth
-DO NOT take the money envelope home
with you!
-accurately presents the child with
equipment/materials costs (i.e It took me
3 hours to go to the store and get the
necessary materials for you, so charge me
for 3 hours of labor. Be an honest
employee!)
