Mandatory Calculator Letter

June 6th, 2014
Dear Parents,
In order to ensure that our students are successful in high school Math, we will be requiring ALL students in
8th-12th grade to own a TI-Nspire calculator for the 2014-2015 school year.
Math courses have increasingly been aimed at preparing students for success in college courses and 21st
century careers. The use of a graphing calculator in math classes has been shown to allow students to
deepen their mathematical reasoning skills while simultaneously developing technology skills that students can
use in their future. Students will be able to use the calculator we are requiring them to buy on the STAAR
starting in 8th grade, as well as sections of the Common Assessments, AP, SAT, and ACT exams.
The TI-Nspire graphing calculators are sold at retailers like Walmart, Office Depot, Staples, etc., and brandnew calculators range in price from $100-$150. Used or refurbished calculators can also be purchased at
lower prices. It is highly recommended that calculators are purchased throughout the summer. Students will
be expected to have their calculator at the beginning of the school year.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. If you have any questions before making your
purchase, please contact Mr. Schumacher, Math Dean of Instruction, at 713-201-0281.
Sincerely,
The YES Prep SE Math Team
