RE:
Calculator Use Policy
The Mathematics Department realizes that the graphing calculator is a costly investment.
We ask you to purchase one because the Mathematics Department is strongly committed
to using graphing calculators to enhance learning. Calculators have become a necessary tool
to prepare students to compete in an ever-changing technological world. While calculators
are not a substitute for comprehension, they assist students in making connections, making
abstract concepts more concrete, and preventing arithmetic errors.
A TI-84-Plus C is recommended for all Warren Township High School Mathematics
courses. This calculator will be used by the teacher for classroom demonstrations and
other course activities. In many classes assignments and assessments are written with the
TI-84-Plus C in mind. The teacher should be able to assist students in using the
recommended calculator. While other models of calculators are acceptable, the teacher
may not be able to assist with them. (We are recommending the TI-84-Plus C because it is
our understanding that Texas Instruments is phasing out the TI-84-Plus graphing
calculator and going to the TI-84-Plus C. The TI-84-Plus C is the color edition of the TI84-Plus and comes with rechargeable batteries.)
Students will be able to use the TI-84-Plus C throughout their time at WTHS and many
colleges use graphing calculators as part of their math curriculums. The TI-84-Plus C may
also be used on the PARCC and ACT college readiness assessment. There are some models
of calculators that are unacceptable for use in our math classes. Namely any calculator
having a Computer Algebra System (CAS). Some unauthorized calculators include the TI89, TI-92, and TI-NSpire CAS. In addition, these calculators are not permitted to be
used on the PARCC and ACT college readiness assessment.
Again, we appreciate you purchasing a graphing calculator and we
guarantee that it will be used in class as more than just a scientific
calculator.
