Notre Dame Athletics – January Newsletter 2014 Happy New Year to all of our family and friends of Notre Dame Athletics! May this year bring Peace and good health to you and your families. As we turn the page to a New Year, our student-athletes have not skipped a beat! Training ever so hard over the holidays our Basketball and Wrestling athletes have continued dominance respectively on their fields of play and are gearing up for the start of the regular season. –Go Jugglers Wrestling – Mr. B. Hutchison “Had one tournament to date - Elite Section for the War on the Floor at SFU and good things were seen by our wrestlers. Congratulations to all the ND wrestlers who competed in the Wildcat Invitational wrestling meet last Friday. Our team finished well with Kristian Vidas, Flixzl Reyes and Marlena Woldring coming home with silver medals. David Ho won a bronze medal and Kian Sun, Pawel Szidlowski, Rebecca Ho and Alex Sze each finished in fourth place. Blake Pickard was the highlight finishing with a gold medal by destroying his Vancouver College opponent in the final. Basketball Updates: (Girls) Grade 8 - this year's grade 8 girls basketball team shows promise and talent. Lead by Olivia Austin, the girls finished 1st and 4th in competitive tournaments. With their solid work ethic and positive attitude the girls are rising to the challenges of their competitive league. JV – Good start to our season….Big win over St. Pat’s and now our team is hard at work improving each day and ready for the next challenge. Sr Girls - This season, a young Varsity Girls basketball team is playing a challenging schedule, facing many top ranked teams. Eight tournaments and competition in the always tough Independent league will show the mettle of these girls. Highlights so far include: a big win over 5th ranked AAA Argyle in December, a 3rd place finish at the GW Graham Tournament, a 2nd place finish at the SMU tournament and a hard fought 2nd place finish at their own Juggler Classic against a very hot Britannia team. A disappointing 6th at the BC Catholics will only serve to spur the girls on to work harder to achieve their goal: a repeat appearance at the AA Provincials, finishing in the top 6. Acknowledgements to grade 11 point guard and floor leader, Lauren Bondi, who has received a number of all-star awards this season and to grade 10 guard, Trisha Francia who has accepted the challenge of being a leader on the Senior team. Basketball Updates: (Boys) The 2013-2014 Season is off to a great start this year. Our boys program as a whole is sitting at a record of 23-7. We have high hopes for our grade 8 boys that have found chemistry and a great work ethic under Coach Pavan, that has earned them 2 tournament championships and their lone loss on the season to date found them placing 3rd at the Kwantlen College Tournament. At the end of the month (January 31st-February 1st) the grade 8 boys will host their own Notre Dame Athletics – January Newsletter 2014 Juggler Classic and attempt to defend Alumni Hall against the likes of New Westminster and Handsworth. The Junior boys have achieved greater success this year under Coach MacLean and their young season is highlighted by a overtime win versus Saint Patrick’s. The Varsity Boys team has also found some early season chemistry under Coach Boreham as of late, along with a determined will to win. “When we play US it’s fun, and US is: we play hard and fast, together, as a TEAM.” (Aldrich Berrios Varsity Captain, Juggler Classic Tournament MVP) Their recent success has stemmed from their defensive efforts, leading to a tournament Championship in Lynden, Washington and an entertaining, thrilling overtime win in the Championship of the Varsity Juggler Classic versus a red hot very strong Saint Thomas Aquinas 69-67. Further success has carried them to a third place finish at the 27th Annual BC Catholics.
