SUMMARY
A large health system based in IL is looking for a Clinical Informaticist. The Clinical Informaticist functions as the
clinical expert, educator, consultant, leader and researcher for clinical information systems. The Clinical Informaticist
is responsible for providing the clinical and informatics expertise required for the successful development, evaluation,
implementation, training, and maintenance of system-wide clinical analytic processes and systems. The role will
function as both an internal consultant and project manager to improve system-wide clinical process and outcomes.
The Clinical Informaticist will help guide analytic process development and education for all Clinical Analytics
initiatives in accordance with the strategic objectives of the enterprise.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Lead System-wide Clinical Informatics Efforts:
o Support Clinical Enterprise Analytic strategies to achieve the organizations short and long-term goals and
objectives, including the centralization of clinical analytic functions.
o Analyze, design, test, implement, evaluate, plan, support and maintain integrated and interfaced
enterprise-wide clinical applications and their functionality.
o Translate nursing practice information between nurses and systems engineers, analysts, or designers using
object-oriented models or other techniques.
o Coordinate and perform analysis, design, development, and some QA testing validations and implementation
of documentation screens used by clinicians to perform clinical care
o Optimize information system/applications for analysis of patient medical records and other data sources
for adherence to standards of care.
o Facilitate system-wide physician profiling and scorecard development work.
o Develop reports, dashboards, scorecards, and other analytic results needed to support Quality
Performance Improvement activities, regulatory compliance, accreditation, managed care contracting,
grants, and other clinical analytics studies.
o Collaboration with Clinical Analytics Managers to:
 Ensure compliance with the standards, policies, procedures and processes for the creation,
consumption and reporting of clinical data, including service level agreements.
 Provide consultation to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards including national, state,
NCQA, CMS, AHRQ, NQF, and TJC requirements.
o Inform local, state, national and international health policies related to information management and
communication, confidentiality and security, patient safety, infrastructure development and economics.
Project Management, Facilitation and Training:
o Develop and administer training for teams on new technology, creating process documents and operating
manuals as needed.
o Recording, analyzing and mitigating technology issues and challenges
o Utilize quality improvement tools and methods to improve processes that affect the reliability and validity
of data.
o Develop strategies, policies or procedures for introducing, evaluating or modifying information technology
applied to nursing practice, administration, education, or research.
o Design activities to promote and publicize implementation of performance metrics to employees, medical
staff members, and the community.
o Work collaboratively with Health Partners, Life Connections, and the EMR team to develop disease
management metrics, implement technology strategies, and support processes to facilitate
implementation of analytics strategies.
o Facilitate clinical process improvement activities and clinician workflow processes across all enterprise
departments.
o Provide input into clinical analytics and information systems vendor selection.
Drive Clinical Research and Innovation
o Continually monitor and evaluate opportunities that improve technology design, optimize care delivery
and ensure that the applications and systems utilized are consistent with professional standards of best
clinical practice and achieve the best clinical outcomes in advancing areas such as population health,
genetics, and/or antibiotic stewardship.

Support the system director in the development of partnerships with healthcare agencies and other key
industry partners to build research collaborations and/or grant opportunities.
Support clinical analytic integration across the organization to lead the effective use of analytic
information to improve healthcare.
Read current literature, talk with colleagues, and participate in professional organizations or conferences
to keep abreast of developments in informatics.
QUALIFICATIONS

 Current nursing techniques, principles, and practices
 Understanding of electronic healthcare systems, such as Meditech, EPIC, and Cerner
 Ability to learn and teach clinical IT systems
 Understanding of regulatory/accreditation agency standards
 Maintain the confidentiality of patient information, reports, transactions, and records
 Current trends and issues in healthcare
 Ability to work effectively with various levels of management personnel, physicians, board members and other
community members required.
 Positive and effective interpersonal written and verbal communication skills required.
 Ability to lead and facilitate group decision making and conflict resolution required. Excellent management
and organizational skills required.
 Ability to manage multiple priority projects simultaneously required.
 Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from multiple data sources required.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelors or Associate healthcare degree or related degree required. Master’s degree in Nursing Informatics, Information
Management, Healthcare Administration or degree in related field is strongly preferred. Seven to ten years of Informaticsrelated experience. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed with excellent organizational, analytical, writing, interpersonal
and project management skills.
Computer Skills
Required skills: using Microsoft Office suite of products, knowledge using Excel as well as working knowledge in
Health care Informatics using: Business Objects, IBM Cognos, Midas Solutions, McKesson Decision Support
applications or other equivalent systems.
Preferred skills include: Previous experience coaching and training clinicians in use of information systems, familiarity
with ICD coding, Midas, McKesson, Epic or Meditech systems and project management certification. Familiarity with
Core measures, Meaningful use and VBP desired.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Preferred certification, licenses and registration in information technology, business intelligence, and/or a clinical
designation.
